AbstractWound inoculation with an isolate ofNectria coccineaproduced cankers in beech bark, the size of which was related to the severity of C.fagisugainfestation. Lesions were absent in most cases following surface inoculation of bark (non wounding) with very localised but heavy infestation. Inhibition of the host's response to fungal invasion is considered to be an important part of the insect's role in producing beech bark disease.

AbstractSecondary needles ofPinus sylvestrisafford at least five distinct habitats in which microfungi mature and fruit. Three are occupied profusely byLophodermium, a different species in each (L. pinastrion senesced needles,L. conigenumon needles on dying trees or branches andL. seditiosumon young needles on seedlings and in young plantations). The biology of each species is examined in its appropriate habitat.

AbstractStudies of fine roots and biotic activities in the rhizosphere of silver firs affected by dieback. The studies were focused on the fine roots in order to describe mycorrhizal associations in their natural habitat and especially any pathological symptom. Some biotic activities of short root complexes and of the perirhizosphere were determined. In the soil horizons enzymatic activities were markedly influenced by fine roots. A positive correlation between ectomycorrhizal short roots and the enzyme content has been observed.

AbstractThe relationship between pollution resistance and drought resistance in spruce, Picea abies (L.) Karst. Under conditions of poor water supply, grafts of Norway spruce (P. abies[L.] Karst.) resistant to SO2were also resistant to water deficiency.Clones resistant to air pollution and water deficiency showed delayed loss of needles when ill supplied with water. As 5 year old grafts under conditions of water deficiency they occupied the same positions respectively on the scale of damage.
