AbstractA method is described for measuring the permeability to water of fresh coniferous wood samples in accordance with the provisions of Darcy's Law describing fluid flow through porous media. Departures from this law are also described and briefly discussed.

AbstractThe effect of the stem disease caused byPeridermium pini(Pers.) Lev. on the water relations ofPinus sylvestrisL. was investigated by comparing the permeability to water of wood from healthy and diseased stems. It was found that affected wood becomes impermeable and that severe infections cause complete loss of conducting ability in the stem. The impermeable wood is both resinous and dry; the importance of these features in causing the loss of permeability is discussed in relation to this and some other diseases.

AbstractWell‐lighted plants may contain considerable amounts of ascorbic acid (AA) particularly in their chloroplasts. AA is known to be a strong reductant which fulfils several functions in photosynthesis. AA may also influence detoxification of polluted plants, e.g. by reducing SO2. AA contents of forest tree species were distinctly decreased by shading, particularly in light demanding species. AbstractCeratocystis fimbriata(Ell. et Halst.) Davidsonf.plataniWalter development in Plane‐tree (Platanus OrientalisL.) tissues was examined by scanning electron microscope. All the fungal elements are smooth except for doliform endoconidia which are characterized by a rough surface and protruding rims.The fungus penetrates lesions and spreads rapidly along medullary rays into the pith and finally into the xylem elements. The hyphal presence in pith cells causes the disappearance of plastids and breakdown of the middle lamellae. AbstractPollution of leaf and needle surfaces near a highway and its effect on stomatal diffusive resistance. Young clones of several trees and shrubs were exposed on the dividing strip of a highway in spring 1976. After three months, surfaces of leaves and needles were extremely polluted and their stomata occluded. During warm dry days in June and July stomatal diffusive resistance in aspen, birch, alder and ash showed a significant (P<0.02) decrease compared to control plants. Compared with the control, temperature on the strip was higher in the soil but not in the air. It is suggested that this pollution effect may cause an increased water stress and reduced growth of plants in dry, hot periods.

AbstractOn the occurrence and significance of bacteria in living trees of Populus nigra L. Eleven strains of bacteria were isolated from sapwood and heartwood of living poplar trees (Populus nigraL.) and identified mostly asErwinia, Xanthomonas, AgrobacteriumandAcinetobacter.Most of them were able to attack milled wood and the wood components pectin, hemicelluloses and holocellulose; α‐cellulose and lignin were not consumed. AbstractThe effect of monoterpenes on the mycelial growth of Fomes annosus (Fr.) Cke. Four monoterpenes, singly and in mixture, were tested for their effect on the mycelial growth ofFomes annosus. Inhibition was caused by all the substances, the severity depending on material and concentration. The inhibition was not maintained over the entire study period.
