AbstractLignin has been hypothesized to be the primary mechanism of resistance to fungal pathogens in plant tissue. Degradation of lignin and cellulose byArmillaria ostoyaecultured for six weeks in Melin‐Norkrans medium containing various nitrogen and carbon sources was measured radiometrically. No consistent pattern of lignin or cellulose degradation was found, regardless ofA. ostoyaeisolate, nitrogen source and concentration, or carbon concentration. More lignin was degraded as the concentration of glucose and fructose increased but not when the concentration of sucrose increase

AbstractEndophytic fungi have been isolated from buds and twigs of beech trees collected at four different sites in Switzerland.Discula umbrinella. was recovered at high frequencies from the bud scales and the twig pieces contiguous to the buds, but was virtually absent from the rolled up leaves enclosed by the scales. AbstractG. abietinacauses severe dieback in pole‐stage stands of Scots pine in Britain. The susceptibility of ll provenances of Scots pine and of three other conifer species was tested by inoculations. Significant differences in susceptibility were found amongst Scots pine provenances, with those originating from a native Scottish pinewood at Loch Maree showing the highest levels of disease. Corsican pine was shown to be the most susceptible species tested although sporulation was greatest on Scots pine. Norway spruce was also shown to be susceptible when inoculated late in the growing season. Infection in lodgepole pine was negligible. High levels ofβ‐phellandrene were tentatively linked with resistance among trees in a single stand of Scots

AbstractRecords from western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) trees naturally exposed to infection by hemlock dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium tsugense) and controlled inoculations of grafted branch scions from a selection of these trees indicated a repeatability of the levels of resistance to the disease in the clonal material. Evidence pointed to a resistance mechanism operating within, rather than outside, the host branch.
