AbstractThe production of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was used to detect variation in the isolates ofHeterobasidion annosumwith various geographical origins. Specific RAPD products were detected for each of the intersterility groups: the European S, F, P and the North American S group. There was considerably more polymorphism found among European S than P isolates. The analysis of RAPDs was shown to be a simple and a fast way to generate DNA markers specific to the previously established intersterility groups and thus useful for diagnostic purposes.

AbstractIn an inoculation experiment to test the effect of wood moisture content on infection of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) stumps by basidiospores ofHeterobasidion annosum, exposure to high rainfall increased infection in the heartwood and reduced sapwood infection compared to covered stumps. This was associated with a greater moisture content in both wood types. Within‐treatment variation in the amount of infection was high and it is suggested that endogenous factors in stumps may have a greater influence on infection than the environment or the availability of spore

AbstractThe objective of the study was to determine the role of FinnishBursaphelenchus mucronatusas a possible pathogen in Scots pine,Pinus sylvestris, under Finnish ambient weather conditions. Small seedlings and young field grown trees were used as inoculation targets. The results suggested the nematode being of minor importance as a tree pathogen in Finland.

AbstractThe effectiveness of compartmentalization following wounding was tested in red spruce trees at two locations in the northeastern United States. The test provided a basis to rank the two forest stands on the basis of the effectiveness of compartmentalization.

AbstractGanoderma lucidumcaused root rot in anAcaciaarboretum. Stumps colonized by the fungus were the source of infection. Among 18 species.Acacia albida, A. aneura, A. decurrens, A. murrayana and A. victoriaewere the most susceptible to the disease whereasA. greggiiandA. verekshowed resistance.
