AbstractThe pattern of decay developing inUlmns procerakilled byCeratocystis ulmiwasexamined.Flammulina velutipeshad caused some decay and discolouration in most trees which had been dead for more than two years. Decay caused byPleurotus sapiduswas less common.Pleurotus palmatuswas frequently isolated from wood in the upper trunk showing no visible deterioration. Trees should be felled within two years of death in order to retain the value of their timber.

AbstractModification in discase‐sensibility of forest plants by herbicide treatment. I. Field trials with Lophodermium pinastri. The effect of two herbicides TOP‐KH (salt of 2,4,5‐T) and Casoron G (Dichlobenil) on incidence ofLophodermium pinastrion Scots pine(Pinus sylvestriíL.) was investigated in field trials with potted plants.Treatment with TOP‐KH led to increase in infection with higher herbicide concentrations and to higher numbers of severely infected plants in comparison with controls. Differences were greatest in spring.With Casoron G, however, smaller numbers of sevcrely infected plants were seen in spring and at the end of the growing season the damage was not much greater than in the controls.Possible reasons for changes in degree of infection are discussed as well as effects that could be expected on the epidemiology of pine nee

AbstractPicloram was injected to different depths in the stems of aspen trees during spring and summer, and the killing effect on the foliage was studied. The efficacy of the applied dosage was correlated better to the surface area and volume of the stem than to the diameter. The young foliage was affected first by the herbicide. Both the xylem and the phloem were involved in the effects that resulted from translocation of the herbicide.

AbstractCauses and criteria of resistancë to air pollution in Norway spruce. 3. Tolerance of toxic materials (“internal” resistance). Comparing relatively resistant and not resistant Norway spruce clones, an attempt was made to find differences by investigating the relation of needle colour and absorption of sulfur, needle pH‐value and buffer capacity, sulphur distribution within several of their needle components and within the total plant, the ratio of organically fixed sulfur to total sulfur content of noedles, and content of sulfhydril groups, protein and chlorophyll of needles. AbstractThe longevity of the decay fungi, Polyporus gchweinitzii Fr. and Sparassis crispa (Wulf. in Jacq.) ex Fr. in stumps of Scots pine. In the Federal Republic of Germany Douglas fir is often planted on sites which formerly carricd Scots pine. The longevity of Polyporus schweinitzii and Sparassis crispa, parasites of both tree species, in the stumps of the Scots pine was investigated.Six years after felling, both P. schweinitzii and S. crispa were isolated from 11% of the stumps. Sixteen years after felling, the figures were respectively, 10% and 8%.
