AbstractMicroscopic appearence of wood decomposed by Fomes annosus (Fr.) Cooke. Different stages of decay due toFomes annosuswere studied microscopically. The progress of disintegration is almost the same as that caused by other white rot fungi. Typical features are small zones of enzymatic activity, numerous borcholes of various sizes, and complete dissolution of parts of cellwalls. Pseudoparenchymatous accumulations of mycelium may block tracheids rather like partition walls, and skin‐like formations and a great deal of amorphous, or crystalline inclusions may be formed in the lumina of the fibre

AbstractThe effect of industrial fluoride air pollutants on the phenolic contents of Norway spruce needles. Potted Norway spruce trees of two clones were exposed under natural conditions at various distances from an industrial fluoride source. The new needles were analysed periodically for their phenolic content. The group of trees closest to the fluoride source contained the highest amount of phenols.

AbstractDieback of oak in Rumania. The paper summarises data on the distribution and development of oak dieback in Rumania and the most important results of phytopathological research. A comparison is made between dieback in Rumania and in the United States, with respect to the pathogenic organisms involved.

AbstractRelatively stable phenotypes ofPinusspp. resistant toScleroderris lagerbergii, are thought to exist in Europe, where the pathogen is assumed to be indigenous. Selections from such populations are in use for tree‐breeding experiments and for establishment of seed orchards. The pathogen may have been recently introduced into North America, however, and stable, resistant phenotypes would then be in the initial stages of natural selection. AbstractStudies of wood anatomy on trees damaged by site factors in central Hamburg. Tree ring analysis and histometry were used to determine the cause of death of city trees. They showed a decrease in ring width after 1954 and an increase in the axial and radial conducting tissues. The cause was adduced to a restriction in water supply when the site was covered with flagstones.

AbstractGomphidius glutinosus a powerful antagonist of Fomes annosus in pure culture.F. annosusisolated from spruce was strongly inhibited byGomphidius glutinosusfound underPicea abies. In presence of the pathogen,Suillus placidus, a very probable mycorrhizal fungus ofPinus cembraand a moderate antagonist ofF. annosus, produces a yellow reacting antibiotic substance.
