AbstractEthylene release fromPinus thunbergiiParl. seedlings was examined after inoculation with virulent and avirulent isolates ofBursaphelenchus xylophilus. Enhanced ethylene release was observed only in seedlings inoculated with the virulent isolate. The avirulent isolate induced necrosis of xylem ray cells and embolism in some tracheids, however, the cambium and outermost xylem was intact where water conduction was maintained. The ethylene increase coincided with cambial death in seedlings inoculated with the virulent isolate.

AbstractInfluence of gaseous pollutants on the epicuticular wax of Quercus robur. The effects of SO2, NO, and ozone on the epicuticular wax of Q. robur were studied by scanning electron microscopy and by measuring the contact angle of water droplets on the leaf surfaces. The treatments did not induce any significant differences in the wax micromorphology.

AbstractWitches' brooms caused byTaphrina betulinaonBetula pubescensformed from the development of large numbers of axillary shoots on infected buds. Broom shoots showed vigorous growth during the first season, but died in the second or third year after initiation. Occasional adventitious root production was noted at the base of broom shoots. Cortex and secondary phloem tissues of the central gall‐like structure of the brooms expanded. The bark of infected material lacked brachysclereids, and tangential ray parenchyma of the secondary phloem were also absent. Numerous shoot bases and aborted axillary buds were present within the bark. Abundant starch granules were present, especially in the phellogen and phelloderm layers. AbstractPhellinus torulosuswas reported for the first time onCupressus sempervirensin Tuscany, Italy. This fungus causes white rot in roots and stems and may also invade and kill the cortical tissue. The invasion of trees by the fungus and its subsequent spread is probably facilitated by fire scars.

AbstractChestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) in South‐west Germany. In 1992 and 1993, chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) was found in three stands in the south‐west of Germany. Each of the three stands has only one compatibility group (vc‐group). Two of them (97 and 75 Isolates) belong to the vc‐group I. They are compatible with the Swiss vc‐group I.
