AbstractCysteine and glutathione in healthy and SO2damaged spruce needles.SO2damaged and healthy spruce needles were analysed for water soluble SH groups. Total SH content was mainly due to glutathione with some cysteine. Increased cysteine content was found only in old needles. Total content of SH groups fluctuates seasonally in the same way in both healthy and damaged needles. AbstractWound decays in spruce stands following bark stripping. 2083 trees in 91 sample plots on four trial areas (24 ha) were examined for bark stripping and decay. Only 25% of trees showed no injury. Of the injured trees, 73% showed some degree of decay, 10% discoloration. and 17% neither decay nor discoloration. Of the wood destroying fungi isolatedFomes annosuswas dominant and appeared to be the most important and widespread of the wound inhabiting fungi in the test area. Besides the Basidiomycetes a considerable number of other fungi was isolated. The most frequent wasCylindrocarpon cylindroidesvar.tenue.

AbstractDetailed study of the bacteriaAplanobacterium populiandErwinia cancerogena, employing cultural properties, disease symptoms, reisolations, serological properties, and filterable forms has shown close relationships between the two species.In both cases filterable forms, size 50–500 nm, exceptionally up to 900 nm were found. The filterable particles develop under the influence of a small spherical bacterial virus, size about 24 nm, which is adsorbed not only on vegetative cells but also on these filterable particles.The presence of bacterial virus and the formation of filterable particles influence directly the virulence of canker forming bacteria, notably the proliferation of tissues and the formation of tumour canker

AbstractGenetical control of needle cast in Scots pine. The paper describes an experiment to study differences in susceptibility toLophodermiumneedle cast of 16 provenances of Scots pine.The results showed principally that it would be possible to select provenances possessing two qualities: fast early growth and resistance to needle cast.
