AbstractSusceptibility of 46 provenances belonging to 16 species ofEucalyptusto Cylindrocladium leaf blight caused byCylindrocladium quinqueseptatum, C. clavatumandC. ilicicoladiffered significantly in detached leaf inoculations. Generally, susceptibility of a provenance to the three species of Cylindrocladium showed significant differences; only a few provenances gave either equally resistant or susceptible reactions to all the three species.C. clavatumwas the most virulent species,C. ilicicolathe least andC. quinqueseptatumintermediate.

AbstractA cytochemical investigation was performed for studying cellulose alteration during phloem necrosis of the rubber tree. An exoglucanase‐gold complex was used for localizing β‐(1,4)‐D‐glucan linkages of non reducing ends of the polymer. AbstractPollen grains collected from trees ofQuercus ilexL. belonging to different classes of new type damage were analyzed. Five parameters were taken into account: viability, germinability, tube lengthening, grain volume of the dehydrated state and after rehydration. Damage to mother plants clearly influences the above mentioned parameters, causing a reduction in pollen grain viability, germinability, and in the ability of the grains to rehydrate.

AbstractMycorrhizas of six spruces of a stand were collected over two years and were analysed for soluble carbohydrates (sucrose, raffinose, glucose, trehalose and mannitol). The level of these carbohydrates was high during winter and low during summer. Upon exposure of excised mycorrhizas to frost or desiccation, the content of trehalose roughly doubled. A positive correlation was found between the trehalose content of mycorrhizas and their ability to survive frost or desiccation as determined by the electrolyte leaching method.

AbstractAspects of the life cycle ofGremmeniella abietina(Lagerb.) Morelet were studied from 1988 to 1990 in stands ofPinus sylvestrisL., 16–32 years old, in southern Sweden, initiated in 1988 with a widespread outbreak of the disease. Pycnidia started to release conidia in late spring and apothecia began to release ascospores in summer.
