摘要:
Enterokinase, alkaline phosphatase and sucrase were measured in human duodenal mucosa before and after intravenous injection of glucagon. A net increase in mucosal enterokinase, but not in alkaline phosphatase or sucrase, was observed during the 15-min period following the injection of glucagon. On the intravenous administration of alanine, a known stimulator of the endogenous secretion of glucagon, a similar rise in mucosal enterokinase was observed.

摘要:
α-Fetoprotein (AFP) was measured in the sera of 183 patients with malignancies, including 37 patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma, and of 368 patients with nonneoplastic liver diseases. AFP was detected in 33 of the patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma, in 4 of the 74 patients with carcinoma of the liver metastasized from the stomach, in 1 of 22 patients with gastric carcinoma and in 1 of patients with ovarian carcinoma. AFP was also detected transiently in 1 of 55 patients with infectious hepatitis and in of 195 patients with liver cirrhosis. The frequency of AFP-positive patients increased when more sensitive techniques were used such as immunoelectrosyneresis and fluoroelectroimmunodiffusion, but it is important to use the monospecific antiserum prepared with immunization against the purified AFP. The maximal concentration of AFP in sera from patients with primary liver carcinoma was 5,900 μg/ml serum and the AFP levels in the majority of these patients were in the range of 10-500 μg/ml. The serum AFP levels tended to increase with time, but they appeared to be unrelated to clinical signs or survival time. In patients with carcinoma of the liver metastasized from the stomach, gastric carcinoma, and nonneoplastic liver diseases, the serum AFP levels were markedly lower than those in primary hepatocellular carcino

摘要:
Serum gastrin has been measured by radioimmunoassay following intravenous secretin in 86 control subjects, 9 patients with pernicious anaemia and 9 patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. In 55 control subjects, Boots secretin (2 U/kg) produced a significant fall in serum gastrin from 40 ± 3.8 to 17 ± 2.3 pg/ml; in 31 control subjects, GIH secretin (1 U/kg) produced a significant fall from 41 ± 4.4 to 14 ± 2.5 pg/ml. In 9 patients with pernicious anaemia, both injection and infusion of Boots secretin caused a significant fall in serum gastrin, 1,030 ± 70 to 360 ± 51 pg/ml and 1,055 ± 70 to 310 ± 30 pg/ml, respectively. By contrast, in 9 patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Boots secretin caused a substantial rise in serum gastrin in six and no change in the other three. It is suggested that secretin inhibits gastrin release from antral cells and stimulates its release from islet cell tumours; this paradox may have diagnostic application in the Zollinger-Ellison s

摘要:
Intestinal absorption of 57Co-B12 (cyanocobalamin) was studied in the cat. Oral doses of B12 in the range of 5-1,000 ng were absorbed with little difference percentagewise. When these doses were placed in the ileal sacs prepared in vivo, the percent absorption of large doses was greater than that of the small doses and addition of homologous gastric juice inhibited absorption. Coadministration of pancreatic juice with the small dose increased its absorption. Cat gastric juice and a saline extract of gastric mucosa contained B12 binding proteins as demonstrated by Sephadex G-200 filtration and DEAE-cellulose chromatography after dialysis with a tracer amount of 57Co-B12. It was concluded that the cat lacks the gastric intrinsic factor that aids absorption of small doses of B12 from the ileum. Suggestion has been made, however, that in this animal species the gastric binder has a certain role in B12 absorption, probably representing a hitherto unknown system for B12.
