The case history is presented of a 19-year old female with an enterogenous cyst of the ampulla of Vater. The patient presented a case of acute pancreatitis confirmed by operation. In a review of the literature six similar cases of cysts of the common bile duct – Alonso Lej type 3 – have been found. Only in one case was acute pancreatitis also present. The diagnostic utility of hypotonic duodenography and of intraoperative cholangiography are specially indicated. Some comments are made on the etiology, clinical aspects and treatm

This study demonstrated that fatty infiltration of the liver produced by a choline deficient diet is accompanied by a high degree of damage to the ammonia detoxification enzymes of the liver. Assays for arginase and ornithine transcarbamylase showed a marked loss of both enzymes in livers on a choline deficient diet. No change was observed in livers from animals on a high alcohol intake with an adequate diet. Neither the alcohol intake nor the choline deficient diet changed the levels of another enzyme involved in ammonia metabolism, glutamic dehydrogenase.

The effects of poldine methylsulphate on the basal and stimulated output of acid from the stomach when given for 30 to 279 days in doses sufficient to produce mild continuous side effects have been studied in 27 patients with duodenal ulceration. Twelve hours after the last dose of poldine the mean reduction in stimulated acid output is 36% (P > 0.01). Twenty-four hours after the last dose of poldine the proportion of patients showing a reduction is smaller, the mean reduction being 12% (P > 0.4). The fact that reduction in acid output may last for 7 days should be allowed for in measuring gastric secretion in patients already receiving treatment with this drug.

The ultrastructure of the liver cells during viral hepatitis is presented. The character of the noticed disturbances is variable with a rather patchy distribution, without any specificity of this disease. On the contrary remarkable and original patterns were observed at the level of the intercellular spaces; an important process of winding; presence of electronopaque grains (probably formed of biliary pigments), dilatation of the intercellular spaces between junctional complexes; joining of the cellular membranes with complete disappearance of intercellular spaces. All the disturbances in the ultrastructure of the intercellular spaces seem to help to clarify the understanding of the pathogenesis of jaundice in many cases of viral hepatitis. It may result from a sort of functional blocking of the “tight junctions” which, in its turn, may precede or be the consequence of some functional [8] perturbations, present all along the length of the intercellular spaces situated between Disse’s space and the biliary canal

In 19 patients with choledochoduodenostomy a liver biopsy and in one liver necropsy was performed and evaluated 5 years after the surgery on the average. In accordance with liver function studies reported elsewhere no essential signs of liver cell damage, significant inflammation, cholangitis or biliary cirrhosis were found.

The authors report observations made on a female patient 68 years old admitted with the diagnosis strangulated postoperative eventration. Operation revealed a preantral gastric tumour which had formed fistulas into the colon and toward the periumbilical abdominal wall. Although the macroscopic aspect was that of a neoplastic tumour, the histopathologic examination revealed gastric tuberculosis.
