To obtain a good supply of antiserum specific for α-fetoprotein, rabbits were immunized with a supernatant soluble in 34% saturated ammonium sulfate of serum from patient with primary liver carcinoma. The α-fetoprotein (AFP) test was carried out by double diffusion in agar gel using the antiserum thus obtained. Serum AFP was found in 93.3% of patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma. The solubility of AFP in 34% saturated ammonium sulfate can be utilized with advantage in the preparation of antiserum in the AFP test for the diagnosis of primary carcinoma of the live

Red blood cell transketolase activity, before and after addition of thiamine pyrophosphate, was the same in 17 cirrhotic patients and in 31 normal volunteers and chronically ill noncirrhotic patients receiving an adequate thiamine intake. Blood lactate and pyruvate levels and L/P ratios were higher in the cirrhotics. Thiamine supplementation did not alter these results. PaO2 was lower in the cirrhotic group. pHa and PaCO2 were not different from controls. Although thiamine dependent enzymes were not evaluated in ether tissues, the red blood cell data suggest that these patients can utilize thiamine normally. Factors other than thiamine deficiency (circulatory changes, hyperventilation, cellular damage) may explain the alteration in lactate-pyruvate metabolism observed in these patients.

The effects of acute and chronic administration of corticosteroïds were studied on the fundic secretion of 10 Heidenhain pouch dogs. Acid, pepsin and chondroïtin-4-sulfate secretion is increased during chronic administration. There is a latent time interval before these changes become apparent. Secretions of total and acidic glycoproteins from the visible mucus are increased during chronic but not after acute corticosteroïd treatment. The ability of the peptic and mucous cells to synthesize pepsin, chondroïtin-4-sulfate and glycoproteins isnot decreased but rather increased during prolonged cortisone treatm

The effects of chronic cortisone administration on the synthesis and excretion of sulfated mucosubstances by the gastric mucosal cells were studied in dogs by the means of histochemical and autoradiographicprocedures. During the treatment, radiosulfate uptake was obviously increased in the crypt cells and the chief cells of the fundic area and in some pyloric glands of the antrum, while extracellular sulfated mucosubstances appeared in the lumen of the glands. In a few areas of the antrai surface and, constantly, around the observed ulcerous lesions, intra- and extracellular mucus content, and labelling was, on the contrary, reduced.

This article deals with the problem of gastro-intestinal bleeding due to aorto-enteric fistulisation. Four such cases are presented, with connection to different parts of the gastro-intestinal tract, in the thorax and the abdomen. An until now unpublished localisation, that into the coecum, is presented. The description of the symptomatology and a survey of the literature are given. The importance of an existent time interval between the first and the fatal, last hemorrhage is emphasized, an interval thatallows life saving corrective aortic surgery.

Aberrations in gastrointestinal blood flow are associated with several gastrointestinal disorders. In peptic ulcer, intestinal obstruction, and ulcerative colitis, the circulatory abnormalities apparently occur as events secondary to the disease processes. In mesenteric vascular diseases, the circulatory disorders are primary. Unfortunately, most of the available information has been gathered from other than clinical investigations. The paucity of data from patients is due to the difficulties of measuring gastrointestinal blood flow in man. A clearer picture of the precise role of vascular factors in gastroenterological diseases must await development of new technics.
