A study of pancreatic calcification was made in alcoholic patients and those with diabetes. There is lack of relationship of tropical calcifying pancreatitis to malnutrition alone, to alcoholic consumption itself, or to diabetes. In conscious cats with gastric fistulas (GF) and Heidenhain pouches (HP), closing the GF, or closing the GF and infusing 1.8 mEq/hour of hydrochloric acid through the GF did not alter histamine or pentagastrin stimulated acid secretion from the HP. In conscious GF cats a rapid i.v. injection of 5 or 20 U/kg of secretin did not alter histamine stimulated acid secretion but reduced pentagastrin and gastrin stimulated secretion by 30–40%. The method of hot trichloroacetic acid extraction was proved to be simple and reliable for the determination of serum collagen-like protein. Serum collagen-like protein behaved as a macromolecular form by a gel filtration analysis and migrated electrophoretically in the β∼γ-globulin region. Serum levels of collagen-like protein increased in chronic liver disease, especially in chronic active hepatitis. Serum levels of collagen-like protein did not correlate to the morphological grade of hepatic fibrosis. Activities of disaccharidases were studied in 115 jejunal biopsies af adults and children with celiac sprue (both florid and in remission), of patients with mucoviscidosis (with normal histological findings in the jejunal mucosa) and of control persons. Results of both biochemical and histochemical methods were compared with the histological picture. Patients with florid celiac sprue have a lowered activity of all disaccharidases (particularly of lactase and trehalase). In the remission of celiac sprue these activities improved. The improvement of lactase and trehalase proceeds more slowly than that of other disaccharidases. Patients with mucoviscidosis have significantly lower activities of trehalase than control persons. It is not possible to pass a correct judgement on the level of disaccharidase activities on the basis of the histological picture alone. Histochemical methods are sufficient for the assessment of disaccharidase activities in routine practice. For a correct quantitative determination biochemical methods are indispensable, however. The necessity of the determination of disaccharidase activities in whole non-centrifuged homogenates of biopsies was pointed out.

It is thought that stress, ACTH and adrenal cortical steroids may be involved in the aetiology of peptic ulceration. Previous work has shown that when ACTH is administered in physiological or therapeutic doses it does not increase gastric acid secretion. We therefore have investigated the effect of ACTH (2 u/kg body wt,) on the ‘mucus barrier’.
