In a retrospective study of 1,550 patients with breast carcinoma, 54 were diagnosed with liver metastases 1 month or more before death, which was roughly 10% of what could be expected. The mean survival of these patients was 6 months, 35% surviving after 6 months and 13% after 12 months. Only 20% of the patients with hepatic metastases were more than 60 years of age. The interval between the operation of the primary tumour and the diagnosis of the liver metastases averaged 4 years. For those with perinodular growth in the axillary lymph nodes, a mean interval of 20 months elapsed and for those without any local spreading, 59 months. The primary spreading did not influence the survival time after the diagnosis of the liver metastases.

Rats were fed diets containing either heated or unheated soybean flour for 3 months. Relative to body weight the pancreatic glands of rats fed the unheated soybean flour diet secreted the same volume but less protein and amylase, both in basal fasted state and following stimulation with pancreozymin. Administration of a test meal of unheated soybean flour, presumably stimulating secretion of pancreozymin, caused a smaller percentage reduction of amylase content in pancreases of rats chronically fed unheated soybean flour than in those subsisting on heated soybean flour diet. Pieces of pancreas derived from both groups of rats were incubated in the presence of two doses of pancreozymin. Pancreatic glands of both groups secreted similar amounts of amylase when stimulated by a low dose of pancreozymin. Pancreases of rats fed heated soybean flour, but not those of rats subsisting on unheated soybean flour, responded to a larger dose of pancreozymin with increased release of amylase. The results are interpreted as a manifestation of an increased activity of pancreozymin inactivating enzyme in body fluids of rats fed unheated soybean flour. However, fatigue of the pancreatic exocrine secretion apparatus resulting from prolonged stimulation by the heat-labile soybean trypsin inhibitors cannot be excluded.

The isolation of the principal glycoprotein from human gall bladder bile samples using gel chromatography, the determination of its carbohydrate, amino acid composition and sulphate content is described. The carbohydrate composition showed a basic structure common to all glycoproteins isolated. The carbohydrate side chains consisted of a galactosamine-galactose unit and a varying number of glucosamine-galactose units. The investigated glycoproteins were divisible into groups with respect to the number of glucosamine-galactose units, each group with a constant number of these units. Each group was subdivided by additional sugar residues which were associated with a specific blood group activity. The amino acid composition showed marked similarities and characteristic quantitative relationships. The concept that the isolated glycoproteins have a basic common composition and are built on a similar structural plan was supported by re-chromatography of the glycoproteins on Ecteola-cellulose and Sepharose 4B. The sub-fractions eluted on Ecteola-cellulose showed a similar carbohydrate and amino acid composition and differed only in their sulphate content. Elution on Sepharose 4B provided one retarded peak. Fractions taken from different areas of the peak showed virtually the same carbohydrate and amino acid composition. The IgG, IgM, IgA and α-acid glycoprotein of seven gall bladder bile samples were determined. The results show that the biliary glycoproteins and the immunoglobulins constitute important components of gall bladder bile
