摘要:
Carcino embryonic antigens (CEA) or CEA-like antigens were explored in 61 perchloric extracts from stools or meconium. CEA was present in 8 out of 30 extracts in digestive cancers and in 6 out of the 31 other extracts studied. Two other constituents called NCA and NCA2 were frequently found. They were partially identical with CEA immunochemically. Owing to their frequency, they will be considered as normal constituents of the feces. Thus, characterization of CEA or CEA-like antigens in the stools by means of Ouchterlony’s double immunodiffusion does not seem to discriminate between cancerous and non-cancerous stool

Under urethane anesthesia a small portion of guinea pig jejunal mucosa was exposed. With a micromanipulator a micropipet was placed in the intervillous space with the pipet tip adjacent to the ostia of 2 or more crypts. At a single site 0.1–0.4 μl of juice was collected and several portions were pooled for enzyme determinations. Dehydration was minimized by covering the exposed mucosa with neutral mineral oil. Succus entericus appeared as small droplets under the oil. In some control periods there was enough juice for 1 or 2 enzyme determinations but in others little or no juice was visible in the field of the microscope. Intramuscular injections of a crude extract of dog gut mucosa always resulted in an increased volume of secretion; the enzyme activity per ml of enterokinase and leucine aminopeptidase was doubled (p < 0.001) or tripled (p < 0.02). Pancreatic enzymes and bicarbonate secretion were measured in 95% and 70% pancreatectomized rats by collecting gastric and duodenal juice separately, by means of a chronic gastric fistula, both in the resting state and in response to secretin and cholecystokinin. Two weeks after 95% pancreatectomy, the concentration and the total output of trypsin and amylase were diminished by about 60–80% of the value in the control, whereas bicarbonate and volume remained unaltered. In contrast, during the sixth postoperative week the enzyme secretion normalized itself again in response to CCK. In the 70% pancreatectomized rats, none of the parameters were reduced after 2 weeks. In addition, fecal fat assimilation studies following three different fat diets administered 2 weeks after 95 % pancreatectomy revealed a slight steatorrhea in these animals only after an unphysiologically high fat loading which was completely compensated by addition of pancreatin (10%) to the food. The results are comparable with the clinical experience of subtotal pancreatectomized patients presenting no special problems of maldigestion and suggest that the exocrine pancreas is able to compensate a remarkable large loss of tissu

The effect of a 75-percent resection of the proximal small bowel on sucrase and lactase activities in the remaining intestine was studied. Eight weeks after surgery, adaptation resulted in hyperplasia of intestinal mucosa to the point that its weight in the control and experimental rats matched each other. Similarly, total sucrase activity of the entire duodeno-jejunal-ileal remnant in the experimental animals (16.7 ± SD 4.3) equalled the total sucrase activity of the entire intact intestine in the controls (16.5 ± 2.4). In contrast to sucrase, lactase activity did not increase in the experimental rats. This is thought to be at least partly due to a lack of substrate induction of this enzym

摘要:
The effects of intravenous ethanol upon exocrine pancreatic secretion were studied in 15 conscious dogs provided with pancreatic and gastric fistulae (Thomas cannula). Four series of experiments were carried out. In the first one (12 tests), ethanol (1.0 g/kg) was given to animals in which the pancreas were stimulated by continuous intravenous secretin (1.0 U/kg/h). In the second one (21 tests), ethanol (700 mg/kg) was administered to animals receiving a continuous intravenous infusion of secretin (1.0 U/kg/h) + CCK (3.0 U/kg/h). In the third series (10 control tests), ethanol was replaced by isotonic saline. In the fourth series (5 tests), ethanol (1.5 g/kg) was administered to animals receiving intravenous infusion of atropine (75 μg/kg/h) superimposed on a continuous intravenous perfusion of secretin (1.0 U/kg/h). Ethanol is a marked inhibitor of all parameters of pancreatic juice. This action is more effective upon total protein and lipase concentration (74 and 77.3% decline from base line levels, respectively) than upon bicarbonate output (50% drop from control value). The depressing effect of intravenous ethanol upon exocrine pancreatic secretion was practically abolished by the atropine infusion. Old dogs proved to be more susceptible to intravenous ethanol (greater degree of inhibition) than younger dogs

摘要:
Biochemical analysis of acid mucosubstances was carried out on the mucosa of the fundus and pylorus of control rats after a short treatment with ACTH or cortisone. After hormonal treatment, an increase in the total content of acid mucosubstances and distinct changes in the ratios of amino sugars, uronic acids and sulfated polysaccharides were observed. The changes found in the pyloric mucosa were more significant than those in the fundus.
