摘要:
The performance characteristics of the Saudi Solar Village Project, one of several projects sponsored by the Saudi Arabian-United States Program for Cooperation in the Field of Solar Energy (SOLERAS), a five-year jointly-funded $100M program, are presented in this paper. It is original and far reaching with respect to the scope and variety of solar technologies involved as well as the unique joint and cooperative manner in which the technology involved is developed and transferred.

摘要:
A new type of amorphous silicon solar cell having a conversion efficiency of 8% level is introduced. The cell has a wide band gap window layer made of hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide, (a-SiC:H), with a good valency control. Electrical, optical and optoelectronic properties of a-SiC:H have been investigated, together with their valency controllability. A design concept and some key technologies to improve solar cell performance with this new material are demonstrated. A series of technical data on material preparation and cell performance are presented. Clear improvements in cell performance, not only IDCbut also VDC, have been obtained. The realistic limit of the conversion efficiency in a-Si solar cells is estimated and discussed.

Wind energy activities in the UK have so far concentrated on comprehensive studies of system integration aspects and a detailed assessment of offshore wind energy systems. There is particular interest in offshore systems, which could provide a significant proportion of Britain's electricity needs. Many small wind turbines have been built and tested, but the design and construction of large wind turbines has proceeded more slowly. However, two industrial groups are developing large wind turbines, one horizontal axis and one a novel vertical axis design, with Department of Energy support. The first UK multi-megawatt wind turbine (3 MW rated, 60-metres diameter, horizontal axis) will be operational in 1984/85, with several medium-sized wind turbines (20–25-metres diameter), due for completion in 1982 and 1983. Electricity utilities in the UK are showing considerable interest in the use of wind energy and are participating actively in developments.

摘要:
A promising system for the photodissociation of water into H2and O2involves the zinc porphyrin photosensitised reduction of methyl viologen and, for practical purposes, it is essential that the yield of primary redox products is maximal. The yield of redox products depends upon the partitioning of an ion-pair, and the efficiency of charge separation increases with increased electrostatic repulsion between the ion products. Where there is strong electrostatic repulsion within the ion-pair, the ionic strength of the aqueous solution influences the rate of ionic separation and high yields of redox products are favoured at low ionic strengths. These experimental observations are explained in terms of a kinetic model.
