Groups of male Swiss albino mice were irradiated by single doses of either 7 rem or 14 rem of fast neutrons with 14 MeV average energy, corresponding to fluences of 1.27×108n/cm2and 2.54×108n/cm2, respectively. The activities of acid phosphatase (ACP) and succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) in kidney, lung and liver were determined at different time point up to seven days after irradiation. Lysosomal affection was respresented by statistically significant increase of ACP activity in all cell types of the three tested organs immediately after irradiation with either of the doses used. The effect of SDH was represented by reduction in activity in all three organs. The activities of both enzymes showed tendencies to return to pre-irradiation levels with time in most cell types especially after the 7 rem dose.

Male Swiss albino mico were exposed to whole-body irradiation by fast neutrons of 14 MeV average energy. Two single doses of 7 or 14 rem were used, corresponding to a fluence of 1.27×108and 2.54×108n/cm2, respectively. Two enzymes were assessed in testicular tissue, acid phosphatase activity to measure the changes in lysosomal function and succinic dehydrogenase activity to test mitochondrial functions and energy production. Lysosomal affection was revealed by statistically significant increase of ACP activity in all cell types of testicular tissue with either of the two doses used. Although SDH was characterised by relatively low activity in most of the testicular tissues, decrease in enzyme activity was clear. Complete absence of activity was sometimes noted. The magnitude of response was dose dependent and there was a tendency to return to pre-irradiation levels of both enzymes with time.

Blood, fish and meat-bone meals were irradiated at dose levels of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 50 kGy. Radiation induced an insignificant effect on the chemical composition of meals. Available lysine in irradiated fish meals was reduced by 8,04%. Losses occured in some amino acids especially the essential ones of the irradiated protein by-products. Isoleucine, phenylalanine and valine were the limiting amino acids in the irradiated blood, fish and meat-bone meal, respectively. At dose levels of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 50 kGy essential amino acids index (EAAI) was 48,24%, 42,89%, 48,38%, 53% and 55,95% for blood meal 37,91%, 39,71%, 39,71%, 41,18% and 37,90% for fish meal and 37,07%, 36,01%, 27,61%, 38,21% and 38,45% for meat-bone meal, respectively.

The present study concerns with some biological aspects in chicks fed irradiated animal protein by-products. Feeding chicks with irradiated blood, fish or meat-bone meal induced insignificant changes in body weight during the period of investigation. However, some occasional and sporadic differences appeared in body weight between control and experimental groups of chicks. No treatment – related effects of biological significance were induced on relative, absolute and dry weights of stomach, gizzard, heart, lungs, liver, spleen and kidney due to the ingestion of irradiated protein by-products. Also, the same tendency was remarked among the groups of birds with regard to length and width measurements of left tibia. Mean hematology data were generally consistent within normal ranges for controls and those received the irradiated protein by-products. The overall results suggest that irradiated animal protein by-products could be mixed with other food ingredients in poultry rations without deleterious or harmful effects.

In three separate 9-weeks experiments, broiler chicks were supplemented with either unirradiated or irradiated (10Gy) animal protein by-products. Irradiated blood meal induced insignificant changes in total plasma protein, albumin, globuline or A/G ratio during the 5th and 7th week of age. A decrease in total plasma protein was remarked by the 9th week. This trend was observed with fish meal. Irradiated meat-bone meal caused slight changes in total plasma protein by the 5th week. Chicks fed on irradiated animal protein byproducts did not affect blood transaminases level which reveal no impairment in liver function and/or myocardial infarction. Also, blood uric acid concentration, creatine and creatinine indicate that the experimental chicks neither suffered degenerative diseases in skeletal muscles nor renal function injury.

The effect of sublethal and lethal total body gamma irradiation on some serum lipid fractions in male rats was investigated. The protective efficacy of estradiol and/or α-tocopherol was also studied. The results of this study demonstrate that the lethally irradiated rats showed significant alteration in serum triglycerides, cholesterol, total lipids and phospholipids level. Estradiol exerted a benefical effect on lipid fractions after one and two days post lethal α-irradiation (8 Gy). No consistent radioprotective effect of tocopherol could be detected on the levels of serum lipid fractions. This finding was also observed when both radioprotectors used.

Chickens were irradiated in a60Co gamma irradiation source. The irradiation has been done to reduce or eliminate Salmonella. The experiments were done to test this decontamination method of chickens if changes of lipids take place. It was to be seen, that peroxidation of lipids was more rapidly as in control. The time of storage of irradiated chickens has to be shorter because of changes in lipids. After irradiation the chickens had have trade quality.

Separation of cesium and cobalt from simulated medium active waste (MAW) by coprecipitation with hexacyanocobaltate (III) salts has been discussed. It has been found that coprecipitation of cesium or cobalt from MAW can be carried out successfully by using only potassium hexacyanocobaltate (III). The retention of cesium and cobalt has been studied over a wide range of pH, from zero to 12. A comparison of cobalti-, ferro- and ferricyanide complexes towards the retention of cesium at different pH values has also been made. The retention capacity of cobalticyanide precipitates for cesium and cobalt at pH 1.6 has been reported.

The preparation of cadmium hexacyanocobaltate (III), CdHCC, is discussed. The product has been prepared by reacting cadmium nitrate and potassium hexacyanocobaltate (III) in a volume ratio of 2:1. The effect of the monovalent cations, H+, Na+, K+, and NH4+on the percentage retention and of pH on the loading capacity of CdHCC for cesium have been investigated. It has been found that the equilibrium behavior and the loading capacity of CdHCC after being soaked overnight in M NaCl are significantly improved. A loading capacities of 10, 30, and 60 g Cs/kg CdHCC have been achieved from simulated PWR waste, MAW and solutions of pH 12, respectively. A comparison of the distribution coefficients for cesium in different media is made.

The measurements of activation cross sections for some reactions induced by a differential neutron flux of (D-T) compact neutrons generator were discussed. The comparison of measured cross sections with those averages calculated from the energy cross section curves found in the literature gives good agreement. The used thin targets were prepared under vacuum by both evaporation and sputtering techniques.
