Groups of mice were exposed to whole-body irradiation with moderately low fast neutron doses with 14 MeV average energy. The doses delivered to the internal soft tissues of mice were calculated. The changes in the concentrations of copper, magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium in the kidney, heart and spleen were estimated using atomic absorption spectrometry. Results revealed a significant reduction in the concentrations of these elements, 24 hours following irradiation with doses between 10 and 25 rem. Follow-up of the post-irradiation response was continued for 16 days for the 20 rem dose. A gradual increase in the concentration of the elements was noted which exceeded the pre-irradiation levels in most cases. However, by the end of the experiment, 16 days post-irradiation, some elements were still significantly below the control level.

Somatomedins (Sms) are the mediators of growth hormone (GH) on peripheral tissues. Other hormones are playing role in their synthesis, particularly insulin, prolactin (PRL) and estradiol. This work was planned to interrelate the GH, PRL and Sm-C in adult-onset obese young males. Fifty five obese males (25 ± 5.09 years, means ± SDM) with body mass index (BMI) 32.8 ± 3.5 kg/m2, as well as 20 lean age matched males with BMI 22.9 ± 1.31 kg/m2were chosen for the study. Morning fasting serum levels of GH, PRL and Sm-C were estimated by RIA. The obese group was classified according to Sm-C levels into 3 groups: low Sm-C level, an intermediate level within the range of the control and with higher serum Sm-C levels. Serum GH was low in all groups. The variability of Sm-C might be associated with hyperinsulinaemia characterising obesity, or altered nutritional status of the individual subjects. Significant positive correlation coefficient was found between serum Sm-C and BMI.

The liver plays a key role in the biotransformation and clearance of steroid hormones particularly sex hormones. The question whether their metabolism could be deranged in liver diseases is studied in 52 individuals (30 patients with type B viral hepatitis infection and 22 control). The same patients were followed up for a period of 2 months after the appearance of jaundice. Serum testosterone and its metabolite androstenedione were studied as the main steroid male sex hormones. Liver function tests (bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT, ALP and HBsAG) were studied in those patients as parameters to diagnose and follow up the liver condition. Serum testosterone levels were found significantly higher during the acute attack of the disease when compared with the control group. No significant difference was detected regarding the serum level of androstenedione in patients (during the acute attack or two months thereafter) when compared with the control group. The elevated levels of testosterone during the acute attack of viral hepatitis could be attributed to the apparent inhibition of microsomal p-450 enzyme responsible for the metabolism of testosterone in the diseased hepatocytes.

In this paper a method is represented which is used for the quantitative estimation of receptor binding for progesterone and oestrogens and its preliminary use is proved for relevant target tissue from cattle and swine. By means of saturation analysis and under use of tritium-labelled steroids a comprehensive characterization of the receptor assays is possible. The characterization encloses the testing of optimal incubation time and -temperature, the representation of connections between specific receptor binding and protein content of the cytosol, the examination of the hormone specifity of the receptor binding, the analysis of the storage ability of the cylosol as well as of the precision of the receptor assays.

Radiophotosynthesis has been carried out using the unicellular green algea Scenedesmus acutus grown, as a substrate for preparing some carbon-14 labelled amino acids. Gaseous14CO2, in an air tight photosynthesis chamber or NaH14CO3solution, in an ordinary photosynthesis chamber, were used as radioactive carbon sources. The yields, radiochemical yields and specific activities of the formed radioactive products are reported in both cases. The results obtained clearly showed the advantages of using the NaH14CO3method. In that case the process was by far less tedious. Moreover, the chemical and radiochemical yields of the formed amino acids were relatively much more higher than the values obtained on using14CO2in the tight photosynthesis chamber.

Es wurden Untersuchungen zur Resorption und Metabolisierung15N-markierter Hefe-RNS an Ratten durchgeführt. Die Bilanz der15N-Ausscheidung in Urin und Kot ergab eine nahezu vollständige Resorption und eine äuβerst niedrige Inkorporation des Nukleinsäurestickstoffs. Da für die Bewertung des Proteinstoffwechsels neben der Gesamt-15N-Ausscheidungsmenge im Urin die15N-Menge der Harnstoff-bzw. Ammonium-Fraktion herangezogen wird, wurde die prozentuale Verteilung der Nukleinsäuremetabolite auf die Metabolitfraktionen im Urin untersucht. Aufgrund der dabei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse können die bei Proteinstoffwechseluntersuchungen unter Verwendung15N-markierter Hefen bzw. nukleinsäurehaltigen Hefeproteinen erhaltenen Daten korrigiert werden.

Many endocrine disturbances play an important role in the development of certain instances of obesity. Thyroidpituitary axis (prolactin) was studied in 91 individuals (37 diabetic obese, 25 non-diabetic obese and 29 control) from the out-patient clinic of Ismailia General Hospital in an attempt to find out a relation between prolactin and thermogenesis (thyroid hormones). The results obtained from the anthropometric measurements showed that there is a significant difference in the level of body fat percentage and body mass index when compared with those of the control croup. This was carried out to assure the state of obesity. The results also showed that although prolactin levels were significantly lower in the diabetic obese group than those of the obese non-diabetic and the control group there was a significant increase in the levels of T3in both diabetic and non-diabetic subjects when compared with those of the control group, while no significant difference was obtained in diabetic and non-diabetic obese groups when compared with those of the control group in the level of T3, T4, rT3and TSH.

Ein3radioimmunoassay (RIA) for precise and reliable determination of androstenedione (androst-4-ene-S,17-dione, AD) in endocrinological investigations has been developed. Specific antisera were obtained from rabbits following immunization with the bovine serum albumine conjugate of AD-3- (O-carboxymethyl)oxime. The sensitivity of the method was found to be 18fmol AD per assay tube. The method described has proved to be suitable for determinations of AD values in blood plasma and follicular fluids of cattle and swines.

In the radiometric estimation of insulin with125I insulin radioreagent first an equilibrium is established between insulin antibodies and insulin of the test samples. Thereafter125I insulin binds to free antibodies in a kinetically controlled reaction. The bound activity may be fitted to the equations of this model without contradictions. But they were proved to be not useful for practical data evaluation. A modelnear equations is given, the three parameter of which may be estimated by iterative nonlinear regression analysis without complications.
