Effect of lipid dietary status and cumulative doses of whole body gamma irradiation up to 15 Gy, on histological pattern of the dorsal aorta of male albino rats was studied. Rats fed fat-free diet showed enlarged spaces filled with amorphous fibrous material lying in-between smooth muscle cells, whereas animals fed fat-rich diet showed none of these changes. Rats fed normal fat diet and subjected to the fractionated dose levels showed structural changes in all the 3 layers of the dorsal aorta. Thickening of both tunica media and adventitia, degenerative endothelia cells and granulomatous inflammation of the adventitia were observed. Irradiated rats fed fat free diet showed more intensive structural changes. These included degeneration of endothelial lining, disorganization of smooth muscle cells and vacuolation in tunica media and degenerated muscle cells. Condensed elastic and collagen fibers could be observed in-between smooth muscles and tunica aventitia looked degenerated with less numbers of fibroblasts. Irradiated rats fed rich-fat diet showed rapid structural changes. These included degeneration of endothelium of tunica intima, reduced numbers of smooth muscle cells, hyaline degeneration of tunica adventita with signs of necrosis and fragmentation, decreased thickness of the dorsal aorta cells and ill-defined separation between the tunica media and adventitia.

A total of 40 male and 40 female mice of equal body weight were used in the present study. Whole body gamma (60Co) irradiation was carried out at 400, 800 and 1200 rad. Life span and several parameters of body composition were measured. Cumulative mortality precentage was lower in irradiated females in comparison to males. Ionizing radiation induced reduction (P < 0.01) in body weight, total body water with its two compartments (extra-and intracellular), fat-free body with its component (body cell mass and extracellular tissue), fat-free dry solids with its constituent (body protein and body ash), body potassium and body fat. While all of the above mentioned body composition parameters decreased (P ≤ 0.01) following whole body irradiation, the rations between the body water to these parameters increased (P ≤ 0.01). Sex difference was noticed either for the parameters or for the ratios.

The effect of treatment with SrCl2(10 mg/100 g rat) on rats 15 minutes prior to whole body γ-irradiation (7,5 Gy) was studied. The hazardeous effect of irradiation were greatly corrected in the treated group. The hyperglycemic effect and liver glycogen accumulation in the untreated group decreased to normal level. The enzymatic activities of serum alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogencase were greatly affected showing insignificant changes in the treated group of animals. Life span calculated on 50% survival was also significantly elongated by 36.3%. These results show the potentiality of SrCl2as a radioprotective agent which was not used before.

The aim of our work was to study sorption and sorption kinetics of85Sr,137Cs and131I from rumen liquid after application of zeolite (clinoptilolite) under laboratory conditions. Zeolite dump corresponded with usual (3%) and high (9%) dose of zeolite in feed. We have ascertained that zeolite is characterized with a high sorption ability for85Sr and137Cs from rumen liquid. 84% of85Sr and 98% of137Cs was bound after 24 hours.

The objective of the present work is to investigate any possible role which could have been played by the long-term treatment with antimony as an antibilharzial drug, and the development of urinary bladder carcinoma in patients suffering bilharzial complications. The present work has been planned to investigate the concentration levels of copper, zinc and antimony in urinary bladder tissues sampled from normal, bilharzial and bladder cancer patients subjected to surgical intervention. Both atomic absorption spectrophotometry and neutron activation analysis have been utilized for elemental estimations. The data obtained showed significant increase in the concentration levels of the three investigated metals in bladder cancer tumours as compared with their control levels under either normal or cancer-free bilharzial complications. The results have been statistically evaluated and discussed in view of the relevant literature. It has been concluded that the contributing role of the antibilharzial antimonial treatment in development of urinary bladder cancer cases cannot be overlooked and awaits further investigation.

A possibility was considered of using yttrium salt as a tumor localizer, as proposed in the literature on the basis of a study based on the PIXE technique. The yttrium distribution after the intravenous administration of yttrium nitrate solution to tumor-bearing nude mice was investigated with the use of90Y as a tracer. The radionuclide90Y was produced by the activation of yttrium nitrate. It was characterized with the help of the absorption curve, decay curve and β- and γ-ray spectra. A slight admixture of89Sr was observed. The organ distribution of the radionuclide produced in tumor-bearing nude mice was established on the basis of measuring ashed tissues, since fresh as well as dried tissues exerted remarkable self-absorption effects. No selective accumulation of the radioyttrium in the tumors was observed for subcutaneously located osteosarcoma and rectal carcinoma. The highest concentrations were found in the lungs, spleen and liver.

We aimed to determine transfer coefficients for milk, beef, pork in the site of planned construction of the nuclear power plant Kecerovce. During 2 years (February 1987–December 1988) the samples of milk, meat and corresponding fodder were regularly taken. Content of137Cs and90Sr in samples was determined and from the measured values the transfer coefficients were calculated. For the whole period we obtained these transfer coefficients: 2.9-10−3and 4.2 · 10−3d · 1−1for milk, 2.4 · 10−2and 9.2 · 10−3d · kg−1for beef and 3.3. · 10−1and 1.1 · 10−1d · kg−1for pork for137Cs and90Sr, resp. In view of the fact that samples were taken from animals kept under usual breeding practices we suppose that obtained values are suitable for models used in prediction of burden to the population in this site from ingestion of given foodstuffs, especially in the case of milk and beef, because the feed for cattle is grown directly in the studied site.

TL materials have a small intrinsic sensitivity for fast neutrons. In order to increase this sensitivity one uses hydrogen containing radiators giving recoil protons as a result of the neutron interaction. By combining the proton radiator technique with the use of TL detectors having various glow peaks with a different response to recoil protons an additional sensitivity yield can be reached. The paper deals with the calculation procedure for the (radiator) sensitivity component. For the LiF phosphors TLD-600 and TLD-700 calculated and experimentally determined fast neutron sensitivities are presented for the glow peaks V and VII. The results show that for accident dosimetry a sufficient agreement of the dedector response with the dose-to-fluence conversion factors is obtained.

The bulk etch rate, VB, in CR-39 was determined by using three methods at different etching conditions. The study was carried out for alpha-particles of energies ranging from 2.35 to 4.3 MeV at three different dissolved layers of 5.4, 7.2 and 9 μm. Based on published REL-data, a very simple empirical formula was given to calculate REL for different ions of energies ranging from 0.02 to 20 MeV/nucl in CR-39, CN-85 and PC. The variation of the sensitivity V of CR-39 detector at different conditions was studied and the results were summarized in an empirical formula.
