60Co-gamma-rays can be used efficiently for sterilizing products, such highly refined ones as drugs, vaccines, biochemicals. Examples of advanced stage application are: sterilization of enzymes used for food production and of supplements for drug manufacture. As economical aspects are of growing importance also for production of vaccines and antigens for diagnostic purposes, methods should take into account quantitative factors and qualitative biological properties. Therefore cautious inactivation of microorganisms incl. viruses is demonstrated. Special problems of irradiation are discussed.

Industrial radiation processing using low-energy electron beam (EB) offers high-speed technologies for converting (chemically) thin layers of plastics, coatings, varnishes, printing inks etc., on different surfaces. Overviewing the main features of the corresponding technique, machines and materials used here, the actual state of chemistry and technology of EB-curable polymeric systems will be discussed on some examples taken from the plastics processing, paper-converting, wood-panel coating and other industries.

Eight aminoanthraquinone dyes were prepared, recrystallized and identified. The prepared materials were investigated by means of infrared absorption spectra. Then the materials were subjected to different doses of γ-radiation up to 4.5 × 106rd. The infrared absorption spectra of each material were measured after each radiation dose and after standing for two months out of the radiation field. Results obtained indicated the existence of Zwitter ion structure for 1-amino anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid and a sequence was established for the relative stability of the different dyes against γ-irradiation. Calibration curves were constructed indicating that most of the investigated dyes are capable to be used as dosimeters up to 4.5 × 106rd. A correlation between the extent of γ-radiation damage and the energy of hydrogen bonding was evaluated. Finally, a detailed mechanism was put forward for the interaction of ionizing radiation with the investigated dyes.

2,6-N,N'-diacetyldiaminopyridine (daapH), 2,6-N,N,-dibenzoyldiaminopyridine (dbapH) ligands and some of their solid transition metal complexes were purely prepared and recrystallized. The Nujol mull electronic absorption spectra have been undertaken for these materials before and after each γ-radiation doses of up to 109rd. Results obtained indicated that the electronic absorption spectral bands of material investigated suffer shifts, changes in intensity, broadening, creation of new bands and/or completely disappearance of others as a result of radiation damage. A sequence of the relative resistance of materials investigated towards gamma radiation damage was put forward.

In part 1 and 2 [1, 2] we reported about the studies of distribution of technetium and palladium during the extraction with tri-n-octylaminc (TOA) in CCl4Results about the selectivity were given, a flow scheme was proposed and the whole, process was tested in a laboratory plant. In this part the chemical stability and the radiation resistance of the extraction agent and the direct influence of the radiation on the extraction of technetium and palladium with TOA in CCl4, is invest igated.

In the last years autoradiography has gained greater importance as a quantitative method of measuring radioactivity or element concentration. Usually a relative measurement is used. The optical density of the photographic emulsion produced by a calibrated irradiation source is compared with that produced by a sample. The influence of different parameters, such as β-particle energy, backscattering, fading of the latent image, developing conditions, matrix effects and others on the results and the errors of the quantitative evaluation of autoradiograms are described. This method is demonstrated in the case of the quantitative determination of the gold content in silicon.
