Radio-iodination of influenza-hemagglutinin is proceeding with low yields only. It is demonstrated that the reason is not chemical of nature – impurities and/or the reducing properties of the carbohydrate substituents of hemagglutinin itself – but is due to the physical structure of the protein. By enzymatic cleavage and SDS-PAGE of125I-hemagglutinin information is derived concerning the distribution of125I-atoms in the tracer molecule. It is demonstrated, that results of this kind are sensibly monitoring differences of the chemical and/or physical properties of the preparations used for iodination. Furthermore, evidence is presented that hemagglutinin aggregation to micelles is without effect on iodination, but has serious implications generally on tracer experiments because of their high kinetic stability.

By means of nonlinear regression functions standard curves of TSH-RIA (Producer: AdW der DDR, ZfI, Bereich SN, Berlin-Buch) and TSH-IRMA: RIA-Gnost (Producer: Fa. Behring, FRG) with high correlation were fitted. Precision profiles were derived from these regression functions. By use of the derived precision profiles and of average experimental errors detection limits were estimated. Influences of these detection limits were discussed.

The large scale application of radioactive tracer techniques as a diagnostic tool in nuclear medicine requires the dosage of radioactive tracer solutions in a volume range of 0-5 to 10 ml with a high degree of precision. Two types of computer controlled filling and closing machines for injection bottles arc described. It is specially aimed at the safe handling of radioactive solutions.

Since 1956 a radiochemical practice was performed at the Department of Radiation Sources and Nuclear Pharmaceuticals of the Central Institute of Isotope and Radiation Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. Beginning about 1970 the programme of the course was entirely renewed to cover the field of application in the biological and medical sciences. Modern techniques of measurement, short-lived radionuclides from nuclide cows, labelling of proteins, compartment kinetics, radioimmunoassays and the estimation of binding constants are subjects of the recent programme.

Das ursprünglich für die Ascheanteilsbestimmung in Braunkohle entwickelte Komplexe Radiometrische Analysen-system KRAS-2“, das auf der Grundlage des Zwei-Gammaenergie-Transmissionsverfahrens arbeitet und zur Eliminierung von Dichte- und Schichtdickenschwankungen des Meβgutes ein auf einem Mikroprozessor basierendes Datenver-arbeitungssystem enthält, wurde hinsichtlich seiner Eignung für die Messung des Anteils mineralischer Beimengungen in Erntegütern getestet. Die on-line-Messungen an einer Kartoffel-Einlagerungsstrecke einer Praxis-Anlage während der Erntekampagne bestätigten die Ergebnisse aus vorausgegangenen Abschätzungen und Laborexperimenten, daβ der Beimengungsanteil mit einem Fehler von unter 3 Masseprozent bestimmbar ist.

Neutron-induced autoradiography was applied to investigate and optimize grain refining in the production of cast aluminium strip. The behaviour of the alloy AlTi5B1 used for grain refining was studied by analysis of both content and distribution of boron. This paper is concerned with the quantitative determination of track density by means of the image analyzer type A 6471 and the results thus obtained in comparison with the amount of tracks visually counted are discussed. Boron contents as calculated from track densities are compared with calibration functions relating track density to the boron content determined by chemical analysis. The content of boron depends upon the position of the autoradiographed plane in the sample, allowing, with its distribution taken into consideration, grain-refining processes to be studied.

The distribution of boron in aluminium, the grain of which had been refined by the addition of the alloy AlTi5B1, was investigated by means of neutron-induced autoradiography and quantitative image analysis. Some aspects and problems of metallegraphic methods for the determination of boron particles in aluminium are discussed. Besides the practice classification on the detector by image analysis the results thus obtained were converted into structure parameters by rising model assumptions and by measurements. In addition, particle density and average particle distance were determined. Experimental results confirm the possibility of using the method described to study grain-refining processes initialed by boron-containing master alloys.

Low scatter of residence time between the single spinning units, mixing effect down to the microranges and space-and time-invariant behaviour of all system properties are important demands on modern spinning plants. Experimental results of residence time analysis in a pilot plant for production of synthetic fibres were discussed with respect to demands, which were mentioned. Experimental determination of residence time dispersion of spin tows and single filaments was explained and its effect on quality of spinning material was discussed.
