Away from tedious analytical approaches and time-consuming numerical methods, simplified solutions to the transport equation are always favored. One of the important approaches is the buildup concept. In the present paper a through investigation of the concept is carried out using the Monte Carlo method. Two media, graphite and iron are selected. Three responses are calculated for fast neutron (14-1 MeV) sources: flux-, dose rate-, and heat deposition rate-buildup factors. Calculations are performed for: point isotropic, monodirectional planar and isotropic planar sources. Systematic investigation of the dependence of the buildup factors on source energy and neutron incidence angle is carried out. Although results are presented in graphical forms, analytical expressions are also given.

The buildup factors for high energy neutrons of 14.1 MeV in a two-layered medium are calculated using the Monte Carlo method. Neutrons from planar monodirectional source are assumed to be incident on the surface of the multilayered-medium. A systematic study is carried out for the two cases: carbon-iron medium and iron-carbon medium. The value of the buildup factor is strongly affected by the order of arrangement of the layers in the medium and on the relative thickness of each layer. A fitting formula is given to represent the buildup factor inside the medium in an analytical form.

摘要:
Since 1976 a universal60Co irradiation unit of the PANORAMA type has been available at the Central Institute of Isotope and Radiation Research, Leipzig. The great geometrical variety of the PANORAMA unit permits very different irradiation conditions. To use this flexibility and for optimum arrangement of the sources an extensive computer-aided evaluation by means of the code DOSKMF2 was developed and has successfully been applied. Some experience of the last 10 years in relation to the use, maintenance, limitations, efficiency and to the computer-aided evaluation of the PANORAMA unit as well as to the design of industrial facilities is summarized.

摘要:
The behaviour of spherical gas flow ionization chambers for neutron dosimetry in mixed nenlron-gamma-fields with neutron energies of about 4 and 14 MeV is described. The determination of the absorbed dose and of various correction factors is discussed. The uncertainty of the measuring result is between 6 and 8% at a confidence level of 95%.

Some exact formulas and approximations for the mass absorption coefficients in dry and moist air are derived. Starting from the experimentally determined attenuation function relations for the radiation loss are given in dependence on the length of the distance, the air pressure, the air moisture and the air temperature.
