摘要:
Prisoners have been designated as a vulnerable population by the US Department of Health and Human Services, thereby requiring special research considerations. Research with incarcerated women is particularly lacking within all disciplines. This article identifies methodologic issues in qualitative research with incarcerated women, describes a qualitative study currently being conducted, and discusses strategies used to improve the quality of qualitative research.

摘要:
Medical records for 129 women incarcerated in a state prison were reviewed to assess the extent and nature of health needs and service use, both at the time of entrance to prison and during four months of incarceration. Descriptive analyses reveal that health needs and service use are extensive with a mean number of 12.7 service encounters in four months. Sixty percent of the sample indicate they had at least one significant medical problem at time of prison admission. Implications for health services and program planning for incarcerated women are explored, with an emphasis on targeting limited resources.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to describe breast cancer detection practices among women prisoners. Study participants were 75 women aged 18 to 50 who were incarcerated in a prison in the southern United States. A questionnaire was used to elicit information related to their breast cancer detection practices and personal and family history of breast cancer. Participants were also asked to comment about their health concerns. Following the data collection women received a breast cancer education program. Findings revealed that the most frequent method of breast cancer screening was clinical breast examination (n=48, 53.5%), followed by monthly breast self-examination (n=10,14.9%) Ten women were eligible for mammography and only three had a mammogram in the previous three years. Six (6.8%) women reported a personal history of cancer and 17 (22.6%) had family histories of breast cancer. Additional findings revealed that participants had questions and concerns about other women's health issues including fibroid tumors and breast abnormalities. This study supports the need for cancer control programs that are targeted to women in prison.

摘要:
The rapid increase in the number of incarcerated women, the growing recognition of the limitations of male-oriented prison services in the rehabilitation of women, and the associated demands for reform that address the multiple issues of parity for women in prisons have led to an increase in the types of programming and services offered within women's prisons. These complexities are explored through an historic view, current research, contemporary models of female psychological development, and a discussion of the development of a gender-specific, comprehensive mental health program in a 600-bed state prison for women. In so doing, the authors raise questions about how to plan gender-specific mental health programming for incarcerated women that addresses women's needs without reifying gender stereotypes.

摘要:
Persons with mental illness reside in America's jails and prisons in ever-increasing numbers. This article traces developments that have led to the incarceration of large numbers of persons with mental illness; discusses related legal, political, and social issues; and describes one state's response to this dilemma. An innovative residential treatment program within a prison setting is described. Results indicate that intermediate care options are both clinically successful and cost-effective. Difficulties in maintaining such a program within a criminal justice setting are discussed. The authors' experience suggests specific recommendations for maintaining the clinical momentum of a correctional mental health program.

摘要:
This study explored the experiences and context of pregnant African American women who accessed prenatal care at a clinic located within a public housing project. Access to prenatal care remains a problem for poor African American women who risk higher rates of low birthweight babies as well as increased morbidity and mortality. Qualitative interviews were used to collect and analyze data from 13 women who lived in the project. Convenience of care was the major factor that contributed to regular attendance at the prenatal clinic. However, women were preoccupied with their day-to-day living situation, which included violence, crime, instability, and a lack of financial resources. Women in this study led complex lives, and traditional ways of viewing pregnant women do not encompass that complexity or the contextual factors that give rise to the complexity of lives of women in the study.
