摘要:
Asset assessment of adolescents is becoming increasingly common in communities. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the “Profiles of Student Life,” the most commonly used asset assessment questionnaire. In this study, 435 Midwestern, inner-city, primarily African-American (77%) students completed the instrument, with 288 completing it twice for stability reliability. Principal components analysis did not support construct validity of the categories as identified by the Search Institute. Both internal consistency and stability reliabilities were poor to mediocre for the various categories. The use of the Profiles of Student Life instrument may not be useful in community assessment with inner city, racially diverse populations.

摘要:
This article assessed the effects of a video, “Dynamotion,” on children's knowledge, self-efficacy, and attitude about physical activity and heart health. A quasi-experimental design was used; 12 classrooms (grades K-2) were assigned to intervention (N = 116) or comparison (N = 92) groups. Students completed a 9-item pre- and posttest; only the intervention group was exposed to the video, during which qualitative assessments were made. Repeated measures analyses were used to detect changes. Overall, the intervention group had greater gains in knowledge and self-efficacy than did the comparison group (p< 0.001), and they seemed to enjoy the video. The results suggest that exposure to a short, interactive, educational video may promote health among young children.

摘要:
The goal of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a community-based effort addressing the problem of physical inactivity. Using Prochaska's Transtheoretical Model as a guide, community members developed television and worksite media messages focusing on the benefits and barriers of physical activity and on increasing self-efficacy. The media campaign was effective in changing perceived barriers, perceived benefits, and self-efficacy surrounding physical activity and had an unexpected effect of changing behavior. It was reasoned that the success of the campaign might have been because of its unique local flavor. Seeing local community members participate in physical activity may motivate people to comply with the media messages.

摘要:
The use of technological strategies in providing care for patients and their families at distant locations has been available since the 1950s. Today's telehealth approaches are proposed to offer considerable promise for enhanced service delivery in rural and other underserved communities. Technology-based delivery methods, such as videophone skill training, and one- and two-way interactive computer networks, are envisioned as contributors for improving rural residents' access to services, individualizing rural health care, increasing rural health practitioners' continuing education opportunities, and improving quality and cost-efficiency of care.

摘要:
Collaboration provides a unique opportunity for a variety of people and organizations to promote faith community nursing. With emphasis on holistic nursing, stewardship, and interpreting the dialogue between faith and health, educated nurses acting as health educators, planners, and counselors can aid in meeting the health needs and in promoting the well-being of their faith communities.

摘要:
Poverty, as an outgrowth of lack of opportunity in employment, basic education, affordable housing, and racism, directly affects disparities in health status. Health care providers are challenged to identify and overcome systemic barriers to health services for the poorest patients. This article describes the population of patients and the model of care offered by the Wald Community Nursing Center, a free nurse-managed clinic in Baltimore, Maryland. Hepatitis C infection is used to illustrate the confounding factors of a costly, chronic health problem and the interventions that have been instituted to overcome them.

摘要:
This article offers a creative approach to promote family and community health, beginning with the conversion of the office of Surgeon General of the United States into the Wellness General of the United States. The content ranges from federal initiatives to promote quality health research to individuals and families who will be the beneficiaries at medical clinics and community health programs. The proposal recommends changes to institutions and policies, including junk food taxes, the National Institutes of Health, the United States Preventive Services Task Force, the Healthy People 2010 initiative, the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set, the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee, state health mandates, local health plans, community medical clinics, and community health programs. The goal is to stimulate ideas and actions among policymakers, researchers, practitioners, educators, and students.
