摘要:
Research with focus groups of adolescents was conducted prior to implementing an adolescent health promotion program. Data were drawn from videotaped focus groups of adolescents attending two rival middle schools. Matrices were employed for data analysis in a two-phase process. Results indicated adolescent health promotion needs in the areas of violence and gangs, interpersonal conflict, and social pressure to excel. The school, rather than the home or community, is the most promising environmental resource for health promotion interventions. Poverty and related environmental risks persist as the crux of adolescent health needs in this low-income, urban community

摘要:
This article describes a replication of the School Community Sexual Risk Reduction Model for adolescent pregnancy prevention in several Kansas communities. The model was implemented initially in two communities in South Carolina. First, we describe the School Community Model—its history, major program components, evaluation results, and the conceptual framework for the Kansas replication. Second, we describe the School Community Sexual Risk Reduction Replication Initiative, including the collaborators, early implementation, strategies for grant making, contexts and sites, technical assistance and evaluation, and reinvention of the model. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges and opportunities of replicating broad-scale community initiatives for preventing adolescent pregnancy

摘要:
The study described in this article assessed self-care practices and exposure to violence using a sample of 161 African American 10th grade students. Three questionnaires were used to collect information on exposure to violence, self-care practices, and subject information. Multiple regression analyses resulted in four variables with significant influence on self-care (gender, age, presence of health problems, and church attendance) and two variables with substantive significance (education of father and being a victim of violence). The 12 variables in the final regression equation accounted for 21.0% of the variance in self care of adolescents. Being a victim of violence was found to have a substantive negative influence on self care practices of adolescents.

摘要:
Of all environmental issues, exposure to lead is the most threatening to young children. The key to children's health is prevention, best achieved through community education. When elevated blood lead levels are discovered, interventions are complex and involve multiple health care providers. This article reviews the recommended phases of lead exposure prevention and treatment and describes a team approach that clarifies roles and avoids duplication and omission of care.

摘要:
The colonias of the US-Mexico border are home to hundreds of thousands of people who reside in conditions that would be unacceptable anywhere else in the country. The community health problems of the colonias are many and varied, but environmental contamination ranks among the most pervasive. Contamination of water supplies is an especially significant risk to the health of these communities. The health and environmental problems of colonias are a phenomenon limited to the border region; however, they become problems of national and international importance as the economic development of the border increases as a result of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

摘要:
The Community Health Demonstration Project (CHDP) was organized to develop, implement, and evaluate substance abuse prevention programming in a resource-poor rural Appalachian area. The goals of the CHDP were to develop new community-initiated and community-based programs and services for the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use during pregnancy and for the first 2 years after birth by women and their families in the target community, to increase use of prevention services, and thereby to reduce ATOD use among this population. Measurable results of the community wide prevention project included increased awareness and knowledge of problems associated with ATOD use during pregnancy and postpartum, new services adopted by local agencies and organizations, more cooperative efforts to provide prevention programs for all ages throughout the community, a range of new or expanded programs to enhance development, and a reduction in ATOD use during and after pregnancy by women in this rural area.

摘要:
Public health nurses have traditionally served as primary health care providers in rural and medically underserved communities. In North Carolina, they play a key role in the delivery of services for the Comprehensive Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. To better understand their knowledge, attitudes, and clinical practices regarding breast and cervical cancer, a survey was developed to assess the public health nurses who worked in the 87 county and district health departments. A 136-item questionnaire was completed by 1,369 public health nurses. The majority of nurses were interested in cancer education and identified this area as an important part of their role in the health department. Their knowledge of current screening guidelines was excellent, although they were less certain of risk factors associated with breast cancer. They reported concerns regarding the lack of follow-up resources and the limited opportunity for cancer education and screening through the health departments.
