摘要:
This research was conducted to add to the understanding of the experiences of elderly, bereaved spouses in the rural South. During this study, data were gathered from 29 informants, many of whom were interviewed multiple times over several months. Data in the form of field notes and transcribed interviews were treated as texts and were subjected to hermeneutic analysis. The results explore the rhythm of grief as it is experienced in three stages over the months after a death; the rhythmic waves of grief, the cycles of sleeping and wakefulness, and the stages of sleep itself; how bereavement is spaced through the life span; and the way informants experienced and talked about the duration of their bereavement.

摘要:
Traditional theories about grief and bereavement have been fundamentally and thoroughly challenged, primarily by Stroebe and Stroebe (1987), Wortman and Silver (1989), and Bonanno and Kaltman, (1999). In contrast to the old grief work perspective with its working through, depression, social disclosure of distress, and termination of the relationship to the dead, a completely different new perspective focusing on repression of depressive emotions and thoughts, display of positive emotions, moderate social disclosure, and continuation of the relationship to the dead has been proposed and scientifically supported. Still, the grief work perspective is very popular. In this article, both the old and the new views are challenged, and a more moderate perspective is suggested. Rational and irrational reasons for the old perspective's popularity are suggested. Consequences for therapeutic work (psychotherapy, counseling, nursing) are outlined. Finally, it is underlined that grief may be a meaningful, enrichening experience.

摘要:
The purpose of this article was to describe patterns of disclosure among adults after their sibling's death from AIDS. A descriptive study design was done by use of a cross-sectional sample including 87 adults from separate families. Sibling responses were audiotaped and content analyzed. Six categories of disclosure emerged from the data: Purposeful, “If Asked I Tell,” Selective, Protective, Restricted, and Avoidant. Categories differed across three dimensions: usual method of telling, goal of method, and underlying belief about public disclosures. It was found that siblings disclose variably after their brother's or sister's death from AIDS. In bereavement contexts characterized by stigma, bereaved siblings consider many potential consequences before choosing how they will tell others their brother or sister died from AIDS.

摘要:
Homicide is a significant behavioral deviation resulting in a sudden and unexpected loss of life and can leave children in the chaotic wake. Interviews conducted with 13 children ages 9 to 11 years during the initial 1 to 3 months after a family homicide provided insight into themes of bereavement. A major finding in the study was that the witnessing or hearing the news of a family member homicide was a powerful associative factor for childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for complicated bereavement.

摘要:
This article offers a reconstruction of the life worlds of 30 adolescents, aged 9 to 18, from 20 families who have lost their fathers through death. Through interviews designed to measure the impact of culture on adolescent coping, six themes on rebuilding their lives, “no more the same,” were identified: (1) isolation from death, (2) incompleteness, (3) staying inside, (4) worrying with mother, (5) building connections with fathers, and (6) restructuring the family. By exploring the lives of fatherless adolescents in Taiwan, the findings of this study illustrate a metaphor “no more the same” to represent life after father's death in such culture.

摘要:
These case studies illustrate the stories of two families grieving the losses of their children. Some 42,000 infants and children die yearly in the United States, but there is a dearth of research for professionals to draw on when considering the family as the context for grieving the loss of a child. These narratives illustrate the identity crisis the family as whole goes through after the death of a child—the sense of parental duty, the need for communication, and the goal of reunification of the family unit. These stories also provide direction for further research with bereaved families.

摘要:
We recruited a community-based sample of 261 parents bereaved by the violent deaths of their 12- to 28-year-old children. Parents were observed over time, and data were collected from several sources. The findings showed that of six individual, family, and community resources examined, none of the resources seemed to improve parents' outcomes either 1 or 5 years later. Implications of the findings are discussed.
