摘要:
Hispanic women are less likely than Anglo women to obtain cervical cancer screening. This article describes a project conducted in the lower Rio Grande Valley to encourage indigent, mature, Hispanic women to obtain Pap screening. Social and demographic data were correlated. The project's results indicate that it is possible to motivate the targeted population to obtain Pap screening. They also suggest that community health workers were very helpful in motivating this community's women and that these women continue to need informal, active encouragement from many sources.

摘要:
The legacy of the Tuskegee study, conducted from 1932 to 1972, continues to impede the efforts of public health programs. Clear evidence of the effects of the Tuskegee study was found in the Summer of Service (SOS) program in Philadelphia during the summer of 1993. This SOS program focused on childhood immunization, specifically in African-American communities. Barriers to the project are described, along with the responses initiated to directly respond to the community's fears. The need for the Tuskegee study to be discussed openly is emphasized.

摘要:
Secondary analyses were conducted to determine if there are differences in health beliefs and behaviors among three ethnic groups. Responses from 1,033 men on the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) and the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) instruments were analyzed using one way analyses of covariance. Significant differences were found only in the powerful others MHLC subscale and in the nutrition HPLP subscale. However, patterns in this exploratory study suggested that Hispanic and black participants' beliefs may be different. The implication for researchers and practitioners is that the common practice of assuming that minority groups share similar health-related beliefs should be reexamined.

摘要:
Alcohol use and misuse among adolescents is a major health problem that has been targeted for intervention at the national level. Studies show that alcohol use often begins in preadolescence (8 to 11 years) and, for some youths, escalates to heavy use during senior high school. A number of factors, such as parental and peer norms and attitudes, environmental influences, and self-efficacy, have been identified as predicting alcohol use. Less is known about how school and pubertal transitions affect alcohol use or how alcohol use and misuse affect health outcome. Although a number of factors related to alcohol use and misuse have been identified, frameworks to organize these factors into a theoretically coherent schema are still being explored. The revised health-promotion model adapted for adolescents is a potentially viable framework for organizing the antecedents of alcohol use and misuse in children and adolescents. A better understanding of the mechanisms by which alcohol use and misuse are initiated and maintained will facilitate the development of interventions for diverse populations of adolescents.

摘要:
The diets of 210 low-income African-American and white women were assessed for cancer-related components, and comparisons were made between the two groups on various food components. Energy intakes were inadequate for both groups, with African Americans having a significantly higher intake. Fat intakes for both groups were above the recommended 30% of kilocalories, but fiber intakes were less than half of the recommended amount. Meats and possible meat sources of nitrites and mutagens were not excessive. A majority of both groups consumed inadequate amounts of vitamins A, C, and E; folate; calcium; milk; vegetables; and fruits. Dietary imbalances appeared to pose a significant cancer risk for these women.

摘要:
An understanding of contemporary youth culture is critical to addressing the complex needs of youths today. This article highlights select findings pertinent to the relationship structures of teens from a broad based survey of teen attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors. Teens placed top priority on peer and dating relationships. They also valued family life and parental approval. Teens were less positive about their relationships with adults in the broader community. The majority believed that adults lack confidence in teens and do not respect their opinions. This study provides a comprehensive database for the development of meaningful youth programs that take into account the relationship issues for teens.

摘要:
This article looks at the effects of implementing an agency-based program for pregnant women based on a lay health advisor model of change. Qualitative methods were used to examine the type of social support provided, level of change targeted, and organizational influence on the program. Results show that the program focused most intensely on the individual change component of the model, with limited attention to effecting change at the network, organizational, or community level. Findings point to the importance of understanding the theoretical concepts and planning strategies of the lay health advisor model when such programs are designed and implemented.
