摘要:
The Internet is a promising new tool for disseminating cancer prevention information. Barriers to full implementation include disparities in access and skill and availability of information relevant at the local level. A nutrition education Web site to promote fruit and vegetable intake is being produced for a tri-ethnic adult population in Colorado and New Mexico. Development is guided by findings from formative research including focus groups with local residents, a survey on computer and Internet use with 200 adults in 1998, an assessment of public access computer sites, and in-depth discussion with local community computer skills trainers.

摘要:
As the availability of tests to identify hereditary predisposition to chronic diseases continues to grow, a need has arisen to prepare individuals receiving genetic test results to share this highly sophisticated and value-laden information with other at-risk family members. Responding to this need, a communication skills-building intervention, based on Buckman's model of “Breaking Bad News,” was developed for use in the setting of genetic testing forBRCA1andBRCA2mutations. Outcomes will include knowledge, attitudes, and health behavior on the part of both the proband and her first-degree relatives.

摘要:
Cancer incidence and mortality rates are highest among African Americans. A series of focus groups were conducted with older African American men and women to identify and examine psychosocial factors that influence screening behavior. Facilitators and barriers to screening as well as other factors that impact screening behaviors were explored. Study results indicate that African American men and women perceive screening in different ways. While there were similarities in the perceptions and facilitators to cancer screening, distinct gender differences were identified in the barriers and specific factors that influence cancer screening.

摘要:
A sample of 115 urban, working-class, predominantly minority men and women was interviewed by telephone to assess knowledge, beliefs, and barriers relevant to colorectal cancer (CRC) and CRC screening. More than half (53.9%) were unable to name a CRC screening test. Misconceptions were common. Dispelling inaccurate beliefs, establishing an individual's preference for fecal occult blood tests or flexible sigmoidoscopy, and helping individuals take a proactive role in the receipt of CRC screening are important goals for health education efforts aimed at increasing rates of CRC screening. Participants' willingness to engage in detailed telephone conversations about CRC and CRC screening was encouraging.

摘要:
This study evaluated the feasibility of an innovative computerized symptom assessment tool, SymptomReport, and a computerized, tailored education tool, SymptomConsult, in a sample of 41 outpatients with cancer. After patients completed the computerized programs, an audiotaped telephone interview was conducted to assess patients' impressions. The study found that patients required less than 40 minutes on average to complete SymptomReport. The mean acceptability score was high 11 ± 2. The 12 patients who completed SymptomConsult did so in an average of 20 minutes. The majority of participants indicated that the computer programs were easy, enjoyable, and informative tools. Initial formative research supports further study of these feasible computerized programs.

摘要:
This article describes the development and pilot-testing of brief scales to measure four cultural constructs prevalent in urban African American women. Internal consistency and temporal stability were assessed in two convenience samples (n = 47 and n = 25) of primarily lower-income African American women. All scales performed well: collectivism (α = .93,r= .85,p< .001); religiosity (α = .88,r= .89,p< .001); racial pride (α = .84,r= .52,p< .001); present time orientation (α = .73,r= .52,p< .01) and future time orientation (α = .72,r= .54,p= .07).

摘要:
Formative research techniques were used to develop a tailored health communication nutrition intervention for Latinas and their families. Members of the target community were recruited to participate in focus groups, depth interviews, and participant observations. Women, in particular, were observed preparing meals in their homes and purchasing groceries. The objective was to identify variables that could be used for targeting, segmenting, and tailoring the intervention. Results from these efforts were used to develop a theory-based intervention, which is described at the conclusion of the article.

摘要:
This qualitative study assessed the feasibility and comparability of findings from face-to-face versus on-line chat focus groups including 12 individuals affected by colon cancer. Discussion questions focused on issues of lifestyle (nutrition and exercise), cancer screening, and treatment. Despite demographic differences, the themes that emerged from the two types of groups were similar. On-line participants generally talked more about cancer treatment and advocacy issues and used support groups more frequently. The anonymity of on-line chat groups appeared to provide a more comfortable forum for some people to discuss sensitive personal health issues. As both methods provided similar results, researchers may wish to consider circumstances in which using chat-based focus groups may provide a feasible alternative to traditional face-to-face groups.
