摘要:
Minority children constitute a rapidly growing segment of the population. The understanding and treatment of children and mental health is in its infancy. Ethnic minority children suffer due to a mental health system that is insensitive to race and culture. Misdiagnosis and improper or inadequate treatment often result. Researchers have an obligation to study variables such as race and SES, rather than control for them. This article explores issues related to research addressing minority children and their families. Recommendations for research, education, and service are presented.

摘要:
Children and adolescents who have been designated as mentally ill, mentally retarded, juvenile delinquent, poor, homeless, or sexually abused at some point in their lives experience a great deal of difficulty in removing such labels. Society has persisted in using these labels even when the designated person is engaged in many of the things taken for granted among “normal” persons of their age and culture. The author discusses the stigma that results from unreliable, invalid, unstandardized identification of psychiatric disorders, particularly among children from ethnic minority groups. Research is needed that improves clinical information processing, particularly among the multicultural population of the United States. For too long majority‐based norms have been the focus of research, with little consideration given to the creative adaptations that have occurred among ethnic minority g

摘要:
Native American families have powerful reservoirs for resilience. Many families experience oppression, exploitation, and poverty that contribute to mental health disturbances. Cultural traditions associated with harmony can promote positive mental health for Native American children and adolescents. Health care providers will benefit from knowing risks, cultural expressions of coping, and a framework for contextual assessment and intervention. The purpose of this paper is to respond to the challenge of developing practices, programs, and policies that are culturally sensitive and helpful for people who need nursing care.

摘要:
Cambodian adolescents in America are a high‐risk group for physical, psychosomatic, and drug‐related problems. Communication with the Cambodian community is a challenge to mental health nurses due to fundamental differences in American and Cambodian perceptions about parental roles and causation and treatment of illness. The authors focus on the Cambodian cultural theme of equilibrium in treatment of illness, management of stress, and patterns of parenting. Conflicts faced by Cambodian adolescents and nursing intervention strategies are identif
