Assessment of the population dynamics of an agro-ecosystem has been universally hampered by the arduous tasks of counting and classifying insects. A machine has been constructed to classify automatically field-gathered samples, using pattern-recognition techniques.

The problem of yellowjacket invasion into sites of human activity has become important over the past few years. Interest in outdoor activities has caused an ever-increasing human encroachment into previously undeveloped areas. Natural foraging areas for yellowjackets have been reduced by housing developments, parks, golf courses, etc. In addition. modified areas with their human presence have provided yellowjackets with an alternate source of food. These insects have proved difficult to control because of the impossible task of locating and destroying the individual nests. Area pesticide treatment would be difficult and unpopular because of the large land areas involved.

Stethorus punctillumWeise, a small black ladybird beetle native to Europe, Asia, and Japan (Kapur 1948), was first reported from North America by Brown (1950). He noted that in collections it was often confused with the native speciesS. punctumLeConte from whichpunctillumis separable only by characters of the male genitalia (Colburn and Asquith 1971). The known North American distribution now includes Ontario and British Columbia in Canada and Maine and Massachusetts (Putman 1955), and Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in the United States.

The cigarette beetle,Lasioderma serricorne(F.), is a cosmopolitan species which infests a wide variety of host materials. Strong and Okumura (1958) reported it from 24 different hosts in California including stored seed of many cereals, small grains, vegetables, and in processed products of many of these, including soybean meal. However, they did not report this insect from stored soybean seed. As far as we can determine,L. serricornehas not been reported as infesting stored soybean seed.

In studies of the microbial control of the Formosan subterranean termite.Coptotermes formosanasShiraki, it was found that the mere introduction of even a highly virulent pathogen directly into the galleries of the termite was not sufficient to initiate epizootics in the colonies. Colonies ofC. formosanusin Hawaii are very large and extensive with galleries radiating out 50 m or more (Zimmerman 1948; Bess 1970). Therefore, because of the distances involved, the pathogen could not be spread easily from the exposed gallery to the main nest.

Two native egg parasitoids,Ooencyrtus clisiocampae(Ashmead) andTelenomus alsophilaeViereck, suppress populations of the elm spanworm,Ennomos subsignarius(Hübner). Both of these parasitoids occur in Connecticut, butO. clisiocampaehas been the more important in reducing elm spanworm populations during the present outbreak in this State. It was responsible for the complete collapse of elm spanworm populations in southwestern Connecticut in 1972 (Kaya and Anderson 1972; Anderson 1972).T. alsophilaeplayed a major role in causing a collapse of populations of this defoliator in the southern Appalachians in the 1960's (Ciesla 1964. 1965; Drooz 1964). We report here the release ofO. clisiocampaeand the recovery of their progeny in host eggs artificially placed in two Connecticut forests.

Lurtox™4is a proteinaceous attractant forMusca domesticaL. and other synanthropic Diptera (Mulla et al. 1973: Willson and Mulla 1973a) and is easily mixed with commercial poison sugar baits. The mixture of Lurtox and dichlorvos sugar bait (50:50 by wt) can be administered in measurable quantities into compact bait units where dead flies can be easily recovered for counting and for other studies. While developing Lurtox for control ofHippelateseye gnats, Mulla et al. (1973) found that moisture was essential for the emanation of the volatile attractants contained in the bait. Therefore, if the prevalent humidity level is not sufficient to activate the attractant, the bait unit designed for use with the bait mixture should include a moisture source.

The red flour beetle,Tribolium castaneum(Herbst), and the Indian meal moth,Plodia interpunctella(Hübner). are important pests of stored products (USDA 1965). Recent studies at the Savannah, Ga., Stored-Product Insects Research and Development Laboratory showed that the red flour beetle feeds on dead or moribund adults of the Indian meal moth (G. L. LeCato and B. R. Flaherty, unpublished). They have shown also that such feeding increased progeny production and rate of development and thus led to larger populations of the red flour beetle.
