The author discusses his findings on a comparative study between the design and technology cultures of the UK and Scandinavia which is being carried out in the Design and Technology Department at Edge Hill College of Higher Education. The programme aims to identify elements of Scandinavian culture, teaching methods and best practices which could enhance the teaching of Design and Technology in the UK.

This article is one of a growing number of case studies to be found on the Marconi ECT Web site. The ECT in Society case studies to be found there are freely available to schools and to the general public and we present a shortened version of one of them here. The Marconi ECT project is designed to improve the confidence of teachers in schools so that more pupils will become interested in pursuing electronics as a career. This case study was initially written by Martin Coleman who is based at the Technology Education Development Unit in Salford University.

Circuit construction has remained essentially unchanged since the advent of printed circuit boards (PCBs); electronic components are mounted on a sheet of insulating material electrically connected by copper foil tracks yet opening up the back of a mobile phone reveals circuitry that would be unrecognisable just 15 years ago.

In this new series, we talk to teachers up and down the country and find out about their experience of being a Design & Technology teacher.To start with, we meet Kirsty Blair who is 25 and has been teaching Design & Technology for four years at Oldmachar Academy, a secondary school near Aberdeen. The D&T department has four members of staff and the school has approximately 1,130 on its roll.
