SUMMARYAs it becomes more widely accepted that, wherever possible, care of the mentally handicapped child at home is a desirable goal, the support of an efficient network of community services becomes correspondingly more crucial. As well as an increased need for emotional and practical help, parents' roles as mediator between the child and official services, and as caretaker and educator, create additional needs for help, guidance, and cooperation with official services. A sample of 97 parents of mentally handicapped children replied to a postal questionnaire asking about the effects their child had on various aspects of family life, and their experience of services provided. Contacts with services were a major source of problems, which often assumed greater importance than problems arising more directly out of the child's handicap.

SUMMARYThe paper presents data from the National Child Development Study which examine the relationship between being in care and school attainment. Children in care had lower test scores in both reading and mathematics than those never in care. The children who were not in care until after the age of seven had higher test scores than those first in care earlier, although before being received into care the former group already had lower scores than the children who were never in care. Between the ages of seven and eleven the progress of those who were in care before seven, but not of those only in care after seven, deteriorated relative to that of the children who were never in care. These results suggest that the relatively low attainment of children in care is associated with factors other than, or additional to, the experience of care itself.

SUMMARYThe main focus of this article is on the children of first generation immigrants, mainly from Cyprus and to a lesser extent Italy. The article follows the process of immigration, and describes some general social background characteristics of the groups discussed here. Finally it describes the main problems faced by the children in their relationships within the family, with systems that surround them, such as education, leisure and employment, and with the wider community.

SUMMARYThe writing of thirty‐five school children suffering from depressive disease was examined for rotational errors when writing words containing spatially confusable letters. All except eight received treatment with antidepressant drugs. Of the fifteen children who improved clinically as the result of drug therapy, only one was found to make rotational errors on re‐examination. It was considered that at least one aspect of the psychological functions of a child was disturbed by depressive disease, but returned to normal with successful treatm
