摘要:
SummaryA significant relationship was found between failure to attend initial appointments and the length of time between referral and appointment dates following the introduction of a waiting list in a child and family clinic. Families responding negatively to the questionnaire were found to be less likely to attend than those who responded neutrally or did not respond at all.

摘要:
SummaryThis cross‐sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of intestinal parasites among primary school children in Northern Jordan. Stool specimens were collected from 1100 children of both sexes from urban and rural schools. A questionnaire covering relevant informations was completed for each child. Wet mount preparation, formaline‐ether concentration technique, and trichrome stain were prepared for the recovery and identification of parasites.Giardia lambliawas observed in 396 (36%) of the stool specimens examined. The infection rates were higher in the younger age group where several of them had diarrhoea and reported variable symptoms. The infection rates declined with age and children were asymptomatic. Rates were higher in children from the rural areas, from low income families, and it was higher in boys than girls.Contaminated drinking water is suspected to be the major potential source of infection. The importance of the asymptomatic cases and the epidemiological factors contributing to the transmission in these areas are discus

摘要:
SummaryThis longitudinal study investigated whether very low birthweight (VLBW ≶ 1500 g) pre‐schoolers with no major handicap differed in cognitive and perceptuomotor development from a control group of normal birthweight children, matched for gender, ethnic origin, birth order, social class and maternal age. There were statistically significant differences between the groups at 24, 30 and 36 months. At all test ages, the VLBW group showed less optimal fine motor skills, and at 36 months, obtained lower IQ scores. The implications of the developmental differences and the sensitivity of the measures are discus

摘要:
SummaryWhen a baby is born with a visible disfigurement, then parents need to adjust to the loss of the anticipated ‘perfect’ child and thus accept their baby. The impact of the birth on the parents is described in the context of a measure which identifies areas of potential difficulty. The two groups studied were parents of children with cleft palates and parents of children with congenital hand deficit. A wide range of adjustment was found. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of their overall adjustment, but there were individual differences in adjustment which did not relate to the severity or type of anomaly. The only significant variable found to relate to parental adjustment was perceived family supp

摘要:
SummaryThe behavioural management approach to treating children's sleeping problems is being used by increasing numbers of health professionals. Despite this there are few formal evaluations of its effectiveness. In this study sleeping patterns of infants in a treatment and a control group were compared. Questionnaires about sleeping were given to mothers before treatment and afterwards, the questionnaires were given to mothers in the control group over a comparable period of time. Both groups of infants appeared to improve their sleeping over the period of the study, and no differences were found in the sleeping patterns of the two groups. The reasons for these findings are discussed.

摘要:
SummaryA number of syndromes included under this rubric are considered, and their main features discussed The congenital muscular dystrophy of the Fukuyama type as it occurs in Japan and in the western world are almost certainly the same condition. The muscle disorder is associated with cerebral lesions which may be due to an arrest of neural migration or to demyelination. Muscle, eye and brain disease, or Santavuori's syndrome, shows ocular abnormalities, as well as those of the muscle and brain, as does the Walker‐Warburg syndrome. In the latter disorder the cerebral lesions tend to be more severe, and it is more rapidly fatal. The manifestations of all these syndromes undoubtedly overlap, but there has been controversy on the question of their identity. Are they separate entities, or are they different expressions of a similar genetic disorder? The genes for all these conditions will have to be isolated to see if the different phenotypes are alleles of the same gene, or not. Some of the arguments, for and against, are presente
