SummaryThe progress of 31 children admitted over a 2 year period to a regional child psychiatric inpatient unit was studied using questionnaires and interviews. The effectiveness of the children's treatment was evaluated using an interrupted time series design. Substantial and significant improvements were observed for both global levels of disorder and specific problems, and this effect appeared to be stable. These results confirm previous assertions on the efficacy of inpatient treatment.

SummaryThe effects of chronic illness on children's knowledge of health and illness were investigated by interviewing 57 children with diabetes and the same number of healthy children of similar age and background. There were few differences between the groups in their definitions of health or knowledge of the cause of illness. The data are discussed in terms of their theoretical relevance to the development of ideas about health and illness.

SummaryThe Bus Puzzle Test for assessing developing language and some performance skills has been standardized on a sample of 425 children living in an inner city area and a rural market town. The age range was 18 months to 4½ years. The study provides levels of achievement in comprehension by age and shows the importance of the 27–33 months period in the development of situational understanding. Assessment of expressive language takes account of the strategies employed by young children to express meaning. The early stages of form perception are examined.
