Dans cet article, nous 6tudions comment la relation entre sexe et ddinquence a variC, des annees pr6cCdant la Grande DPpression i celles qui l'ont suivie, en passant par les annies mOmes de la Crise. Nos donnkes sont tirCes de rapports de tribunaux de Toronto; nous testons plusieurs facons d'expliquer les changements observk, en nous basant sur la theorie du 'contrble‐pouvoir' et sur d'autres thkories. Les rbultats de l'analyse montrent qu'une theorie modifee du 'contrde‐pouvoir' explique adbquatement la variation. 11s encouragent aussi la poursuite de l'ktude de la variation dans le temps de la relation entre sexe et delinquence.Using data from Toronto court reports, this paper examines variation in the genderdelinquency relationship before, during, and after the Great Depression. Nous Ctudions ici la relation capitalhravail dans l'industrie de traitement dPoisson, bas6e sur la taille des entreprises: nous distinguons entre Gtablissements petits, competitifs, et grands, ainsi que les situations de travail la piece. Et nous montrons en quoi cette typologie est utile a la comprChension des chaines de production et des patterns de mise en marche. Deuxikmement, nous examinons les effets des rGgimes de travailsur le proces de travail lui‐mime, sur la division du travail, et sur la nature des activitCs syndicales. Nous soulignons tout particulierement l'influence profonde du sexe sur les programmes de production saisonniers, a forte composante de main d'oeuvre. Troisiemement, nous montrons qu'en Nouvelle Ecosse I'industrie de traitement du Poisson est constituie de trois marches du travail sous‐rkgionaux, en interaction complexe avec la taille de I'Ctablissement, la prCsence de syndicats et le sexe; la structure salariale de l'industrie est le produit de ces interactions. We then show how this typology informs our understanding of production lines and marketing patterns. Second, we discuss the effects of labour systems on the work process itself, the division of labour, and the nature of union activity. In particular, we emphasize the pervasive influence of gender differences on labour intensive, seasonal production schedules. Third, we describe the Nova Scotian fish processing industry as having three distinct sub‐regional labour markets which interact in complex ways with plant type, union presence, and gender to account for wage structures. La loi des enquCtes en matiere de differends industriels est l'une des premieres interventions de 1'Etat en matiere de relations industrielles. En tant que systeme de relations industrielles, elle nous permet d'ktudier le r81e de 1'Etat dans la reproduction de forces de production antagoniques. L'Ctude de cette loi dans le present article a pour but d'identifier I'effet de l'intervention etatique sur un grand nombre de conflits industriels. I1 se trouve que l'intervention de 1'Etat a un effet significatif sur la reproduction des relations sociales au lieu de production ce qui n'est pas sans consequence pour la construction d'une thkorie satisfaisante de 1'Etat canadien. En s'engageant dans la conciliation industrielle, 1'Etat a change a la fois le resultat des luttes et ses propres relations avec les travailleurs, d'une facon et dans des directions qui echappent i la theorie contemporaine de I'Etat.The study of industrial relations systems permits at the same time, an examination of the role of the state in reproducing antagonistic production relations. This paper examines, one of the earliest state initiatives in industrial relations, the Canadian Industrial Disputes Investigation Act, in order to ascertain the effects of interventionism in a large number of industrial conflicts. State involvement appears to significantly affect the reproduction of social relationships at the point of production, which in turn has important implications for an adequate theory of the Canadian state. The involvement of the state in industrial conciliation materially altered the outcome of disputes and the relationships between Canadian labour and the state in directions unpredicted by contemporary state theory.

Plusieurs hypotheses existent, qui tentent d'expliquer la faiblesse du vote de classe au Canada. Je tente ici de reformuler certaines de ces hypothPses, i partir de leurs postulats i1'6gard de la conscience de classe et de la formation de classe. Deux types d'explications sont identifies: celles, d'abord, qui soutiennent que le bas niveau de conscience de classe au Canada est la cause de I'absence de formation de classe; et celles pour qui l'inverse est vrai. Toutes les hypotheses considerees trouvent des donnees qui les supportent dans la ricente Etude electorale nationale. I1 est actuellement impossible de choisir entre elles, alors que les donnees disponibles ont une valeur limitee et que des problemes de niveaux d'analyse restent i resoudre. On devrait considerer les deux modes d'explication comme interactifs, et aussi vraisemblables l'un que l'autre.Many hypotheses have been advanced to explain the low levels of class voting in Canada. This article reformulates a number of these in terms of their assumptions about class consciousness and class formation. Explanations are divided into those which hold the society's low level of class consciousness responsible for the lack of class formation, and those which propose the reverse. Evidence from recent National Elections Study data contains support for all of the hypotheses, and it is concluded that choosing between them is currently impossible because of data limitations and level‐of‐analysis problems.
