Le chômage et la dépendance des prestations de l'assurance chômage qui en découle ne peuvent s'expliquer uniquement en termes de compétence naturelle, d'éducation, de formation professionnelle ou d'expérience préalable du travailleur en tant qu'individu. Lorsqu'on analyse ces attributs, on constate que leurs effets sont médiatisés par l'influence du lieu de travail. Pour explorer cette proposition, nous nous servons d'un modèle segmentaire d'établissements identifiés comme étant marginaux ou centraux dans le monde du travail, et fonctionnant selon une analyse des facteurs des caractéristiques de l'établissement. Les données sont tirées d'un échantillon vraisemblable de réclamants de prestations d'assurance chômage de la région canadienne de l'Atlantique. Nous comparons les travailleurs du monde marginal du travail à ceux du monde central en termes de l'usage possible de prestations. La portée théorique et la ligne de conduite de nos conclusions sont soumises à la discussion.Unemployment and subsequent dependence on unemployment insurance benefits cannot be explained solely in terms of the natural abilities, education, training or previous job experience of individual workers. When these attributes are analyzed, their effects are mediated through the influence of the workplace. To explore this proposition we use a segmentation model where establishments are identified either within the marginal or central work world operationalized through a factor analysis of establishment characteristics. The data are drawn from a probability sample of unemployment insurance claimants in Atlantic Canada. We compare workers in marginal and central work worlds in terms of potential benefit use. We examine through regression analysis the net effect of work world location, its importance in prediction, and its interactive effects with selected personal characteristics on potential benefit use. Cette étude reconnait les moyens par lesquels le conflit des classes et les contradictions structurelles dans le traitement de la main d'oeuvre ont influencé la récente législation sur la sécurité et la santé au travail en Ontario. Certains disent que le déclenchement de la procédure législative qui a abouti au projet de loi 70, répondait essentiellement au coût grimpant des blessures et maladies industrielles que devaient payer les employeurs et l'Etat. Le contenu de la législation semble avoir été formulé par les pressions des organizations ouvrières.This paper identifies ways in which class conflict and structural contradictions in the labour process have influenced recent occupational health and safety legislation in Ontario. It is argued that the initiation of the legislative process leading up to Bill 70 can be understood primarily as a response to the increasing costs of industrial illness and injury borne by employers and the state. Ce document analyse le processus de realisation d'un statut professionnel pour cinq cohortes de diplômés d'université, hommes et femmes, durant la période s'étendant de 1960 à 1976. Après avoir reçu leurs diplômés, les hommes, comparés à leurs homologues féminins, sont parvenus, en general, à un statut professionnel plus élevé, réparti sur une échelle plus large. Les conséquences des differences socio‐économiques sur la réalisation d'un statut professionnel se sont avèrées minimes ou insignifiantes pour les deux sexes. Les effets des différences de l'enseignement reçu sur le statut professionnel sont plus grands. Les rendements pour l'étudiant avec une moyenne académique élevée sont les mêmes pour les hommes que pour les femmes. Les hommes qui ont poursuivi de hautes études supérieures ont éprouvé un meilleur rendement de méme que les femmes qui se sont spécialisées en sciences. La condition du marché du travail au moment ou ces étudiants ont obtenu leurs diplômes s'est avérée le facteur le plus déterminant dans la réalisation d'un statut professionnel. L'on maintient que la recherche sur la réalisation d'un statut professionnel a largement négligé les facteurs structurels tels que les conséquences du marché du travail, et sa concentration sur le prestige professionnel a entretenu le déguisement des differences entre les sexes dans la réalisation d'un statut professionnel.This paper analyzes the occupational status attainment process for five cohorts of male and female university graduates spanning the time period 1960 to 1976. When compared to their female counterparts, males on the whole achieve higher occupational status after graduation and experience a wider distribution of status. The effect of socioeconomic variables on occupational attainment are found to be either small or insignificant for both sexes. The effects of educational variables on occupational attainment are greater. The returns to a high undergraduate academic average are similar for males and females; males experience a higher return to graduate study while females experience a larger return to majoring in science. The state of the labour market at time of graduation is found to have the largest effect on occupational status attainment. A l'aide de données tirées d'entrevues traitant des attitudes envers l'immigration et des droits des aborigènes dans le cadre de l'étude sur la qualité de la vie (1977), cette note essaye d'expliquer certains aspects de la dialectique de la classe sociale et de l'ethnicité au Canada. On constate ensuite la mesure dans laquelle ces attitudes diffèrent, selon la classe et l'ethnicité, dans la direction de l'éducation. Les résultats, tels que l'opposition considérable de la classe ouvriére à l'immigration et le sérieux antagonisme ethnique à l'intérieur de certain groupes ethniques de même que de certaines classes, sont dévoilés à travers des réalités telles que la division du marché du travail du point de vue ethnique, le rôle des entremetteurs ethniques et la promotion de la conscience ethnique pour étouffer la conscience de classe.Employing interview data regarding attitudes to immigration and native people's rights from the Quality of Life Survey (1977), I attempt to illuminate aspects of the dialectic of social class and ethnicity in Canada. The proportion of variance in these attitudes explicable by class and ethnicity, controlling for education, are then ascertained.
