AbstractThe corrosion of zinc metal by vapours from cured styrene‐based polyester resins has been studied. The production of corrosive vapours has been found to be greatly influenced by the curing system. Peroxides of different types have been examined, some in the presence of accelerators. Resins cured by γ‐radiation, and by azodi‐isobutyronitrile, showed very low corrosion rates. Zinc formate was present in the corrosion products. It is suggested that the corrosion is due, at least in part, to the production of formic acid through oxidation of styrene monomer by the peroxidic catalysts, and the slow release of this acid by the cured

AbstractType 13X molecular sieve and chromic acid on silica gel have been examined as sorbents for the removal of mercury vapour from hydrogen at atmospheric pressure and, chiefly, ambient temperature. The molecular sieve had a very low capacity for mercury. Chromic acid on silica gel had a much higher capacity but this was much reduced by the presence of water vapour in the hydrogen.

AbstractAn apparatus for determining high‐pressure liquid–vapour equilibrium data has been developed and proved to operate satisfactorily. The apparatus operates isothermally. Results have been obtained for the ethanol–methanol system at the following temperatures: 100°, 120°, 140° and 160°. The results are shown to be thermodynamically consistent within the limits of the accuracy of their determination. The ‘ideal activity coefficients’ (i.e. calculated assuming that the gas phase behaviour is ideal) are correlated with the mole fraction of the component in the liquid phase by Margules‐type equations (1) and (2). The accuracy of these equations is greater than predictions based on fugacities.From equations (5), (6) and (1) or (2) in the paper it is possible to estimate any pair of liquid‐vapour equilibrium compositions for any specified pressurePand temperatureT.Alternatively, for a specifiedPand liquid composition, the correspondingTand vapour composition

AbstractThe most suitable conditions for the removal of strontium ions from aqueous solution by ion flotation have been investigated. The optimum conditions for pH, gas flow rate, concentration of strontium carrier and that of the collector as well as effect of interference by foreign ions were determined. The most suitable collector was found to be α‐sulphopalmitic acid and removal of strontium above 99.9% was achieved. AbstractMagnesium hydroxide, prepared by precipitation, was ground in a vibratory ball mill for 733 h. Samples were withdrawn at intervals, and examined by thermogravimetric analysis and byX‐ray diffraction (the broadening of the lines being analysed using integral breadths), and their specific surfaces were determined by adsorption of nitrogen at —183°.The results indicate that the particles initially consist of small piles of plate‐like crystallites and that they become progressively fractured across their (001) faces, until they are approximately equi‐dimensional. By a process of shearing and re‐adhesion, the piles become increasingly turbostratic in structure, but distortion of the lattice appears only after 350 h. Water is adsorbed on the surface temporarily exposed during grinding and some, at least, of it becomes buried in the interior of the
