摘要:
AbstractConsiderable difference of opinion exists regarding the mechanism and the rate‐controlling steps in the reduction of iron oxides. The mechanism of reduction of haematite as such with hydrogen has been investigated using data obtained during reaction in a fluidised bed at 600–900°. The analysis presented indicates that in the early stages of reduction the primary resistance is due to gaseous diffusion through a boundary layer on the particle surface, and most of the reduction and also the overall reaction appears to be controlled by diffusion through the solid oxide body. Based on these observations, a generalised rate equation valid within ± 6% has been pro

摘要:
AbstractLiquid‐liquid equilibrium data at 25° are presented for the ternary systems benzene‐furfural‐iso‐octane, benzene‐furfural‐cyclohexane and furfural‐iso‐octane‐cyclohexane and the quaternary system benzene‐furfural‐iso‐octane‐cyclohexane. The correlations developed by Prince1were found to relate satisfactorily the quaternary equilibrium compositions to the ternary equilibrium data, if a few quaternary tie lines are known. Benzene equilibrium concentrations in the quaternary system can be predicted from relationships obtain

摘要:
AbstractThe rate of loss of copper from many antifouling paints has been found to be 2–4 times greater from ships while steaming than from raft panels. For paints having relatively high cuprous oxide and low rosin contents, evidence is presented that the effect is due not to erosion, but to accelerated solution made possible by substantial removal of diffusion layers by the turbulent flow conditions over a ship's hull.A apparatus designed to enable leaching rates to be measured at low and high water speeds (1 and 20 knots) is described. Preliminary results show that the usual criteria for turbulent flow and its effect on diffusion to or from a surface do not apply in the case of a paint, the surface layers of which develop into a skeleton of insoluble constituents. With additional turbulence stimulation, an acceleration factor of about 3 is obtained at first, but later the value falls to about 2. It is concluded that further study of turbulence‐development is requi

摘要:
AbstractThe chemical reactions responsible for heating of moist wool above the maximum temperature at which bacteria metabolise, have been investigated. A model system with glycine spread on the surface of asbestos gave large heat outputs in oxygen at 90°, when the R.H. was above 60%. The reaction was studied with radioactive glycine, and was shown to be a decarboxylation‐oxidation reaction producing water‐soluble polymers.Similar reactions are shown by other organic compounds with functional groups involving oxygen or nitrogen and probably also provide the heat in the ‘wet combustion’ process for sewage treatment. In particular, moist wool oxidises exothermally in oxygen at 90°, giving large amounts of water‐soluble products which lower the equilibrium R.H. and therefore the thermal conductivity of wet wool.It was also found that glycine and wool decompose to a small extent in nitrogen at 90°, but no significant amounts of heat are produced by this reaction if no oxidation has taken plac

摘要:
AbstractThe partition of uranium (VI) between nitric acid solutions and benzene solutions of some cyclohexyl‐ and benzyl‐alklamines has been investigated at different concentrations of nitric acid and solvent, and at different temperatures. An infra‐red spectral study has also been made of the organic solutions obtained. The mechanism of uranium extraction in this system is discussed on the basis of the results obt
