AbstractThe behaviour of aluminium during anodic polarization in electrolytes containing anodic inhibitors and chloride ion has been examined. The existence of a critical potential of film breakdown, above which pitting corrosion occurs, has been established. The dependence of this potential on electrolyte composition shows that the anodic reactions are largely determined by competitive adsorption of anions at the film‐solution interface. AbstractIsrael phosphate‐bearing rock is shown to contain in addition to calcite another form of carbonate, which dissociates irreversibly below the dissociation temperature of calcite. The phenomenon can be explained on the assumption that the calcium oxide produced on dissociation of the second form becomes an integral part of the apatite lattice. AbstractSix fractions of ethyl cellulose have been obtained. Their number‐average molecular weights have been determined osmotically and limiting viscosity numbers at 25° obtained using five solvents. Values of K and α in the expression [η] = KMaare given. Those for α do not vary much with solvent and are not simply related to solvent power. Up to a molecular weight of about 80,000, the relationship between [η] and M̄nseems to be linear and values are given of the constant Kmin the Staudinger expression [

AbstractMelted 2: 4: 6‐trinitrotoluene crystallized as an orthorhombic modification elongated on [c] and flattened on {010}. These characteristics allowed the arrangement of the crystals in fusioncast cylinders to be ascertained by use of the polarizing microscope in conjunction with novel techniques which are described. The arrangement could be varied by allowing uninterrupted cooling or by stirring or ‘seeding’ etc. The cylinders containing the coarsest crystals tended to be the least dense, the least sensitive to detonation and the most prone to unstable detonation. This was shown by Cybulskiet al.1whose castings were among those examined.Uninterrupted cooling in a hollow metallic cylinder favoured a radial disposition of crystals elongated on [c] except at the base of the cylinder where such elongation was axial over a limited length. The colour by incident light of the casting, or of sections cut therefrom, depended on (1) the presence of impurities in the crystals, (2) superficial irreversible darkening due to illumination and (3) an optical effect caused by the aggregates of parallel crystals. Such aggregates transmitted more incident light in the direction of parallelism than at right angles thereto; thus the flat surfaces of vertically bisected cylinders with radial crystallization showed dark median streaks not dependent on the segregation of impurities during crystallization.The peculiarities of crystalline arrangement near the mould surface are described but a true ‘chilled margin’ was not identifiable by the present t

AbstractTitanium tetrachloride was reduced continuously to the metal by sodium dissolved in fused chlorides; titanium metal of hardness down to 180 D.P.N. was extracted from the reactor without interrupting the process of reduction.The rate of reduction was about 0.8 g. of titanium tetrachloride per hour per sq. cm. of salt area exposed to titanium tetrachloride at temperatures of 600–700°.The solubility of sodium was measured in the molten salt mixtures 60% LiCl/40% KCl, 48% NaCl/52% CaCl2, 50% NaCl/50% KCl and 36% NaCl/30% KCl/34% SrCl2(all mol.‐%.) and was found to be similar in all cases, increasing from 1 mol.‐% near the freezing point to 8 mol.‐% at 850°, the increase being rapid over 800°.The solubility of titanium tetrachloride in 60% LiCl/40% KCl (mol.) was found to be about 1 mol.
