AbstractThe state of co‐ordination of aluminium ions in synthetic glasses in the system CaO–Al2O3–SiO2was studied by determining the effects of varying the alumina content (from 1 to 7 moles) on the density and refractive index of glasses of composition 10 CaO, 8 SiO2,n‐Al2O3(CaO/SiO2ratio 1.17:1). The partial molecular refractivity of alumina indicated a fourfold co‐ordination of aluminium ions.The increase in density and refractive index due to the replacement of varying amounts of silica by alumina at a fixed level of CaO (36—44%) has been shown to be due to lower partial specific volume of alumina compared with that of silica and is not due to sixfold co‐ordination of aluminium ions as reported in t

AbstractThe thermal decomposition in glass of a purified sample of zincOO‐di‐(4‐methylpentyl‐2) dithiophosphate (phosphorothiolothionate) has been investigated under a variety of conditions. The volatile decomposition products have been quantitatively analysed by gas—liquid chromatography (GLC). The types of compound present include olefins, saturated and unsaturated thiols and sulphides, and saturated disulphides, which were separated and identified by a combination of GLC and mass spectrometry. The olefin fraction was analysed in detail by capillary GLC. A mechanism to account for the observed decomposition products is proposed and

AbstractLaboratory investigations have been made of the dependence of current demand on cathodic potential, water‐speed and temperature for steel and copper cathodes. At constant water‐speed and temperature, change of potential in the range −0.7 to −1.0 V (compared with Ag/AgCl reference electrode) required small increases in current density. Apart from the large relative increase in current density required to maintain constant potential involved in initial disturbance from the motionless condition, the current‐density requirement was less than doubled for a doubling of the water‐speed. The effect of rise in temperature was to enhance the ratio increase in current density/increase in water flow.The current density requirements of steel and copper were closely similar. AbstractEarlier work on the roasting of precipitated copper sulphide has been extended to comprise a study of the roasting of covellite and chalcopyrite concentrates. It is found that the mechanism of roasting of covellite does not differ from that of precipitated sulphide proposed earlier. In case of chalcopyrite, sulphatation of iron takes place more readily than that of copper, but above 450° interaction between the formed ferric sulphate and copper oxide leads to the production of copper sulphate in increasing quantities.
