AbstractA study has been made of the release of corrosive volatiles when wood shavings are sterilised by propylene oxide. Sterilisation of sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), beech (Fagus sylvatica), Norway spruce (Picea abies), Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga taxifolia) and Scots pine (Pinas sylvestris) with propylene oxide at varying relative humidities and subsequent incubation at 48° and 100% R.H. gave a variable release of corrosive volatiles but usually tended to increase the amount of acid released

AbstractThis study involves the special case of lime compacts which are considered to serve as models for the system of lime in hydrated Portland cement paste. The ageing of lime was studied by measuring length changes of powdered samples under various steady‐state and alternating conditions of humidity. As an explanation for the unique behaviour of lime compacts, a primary mechanism is proposed based on the theory that recrystallisation occurs at least at areas of particle contact when lime compacts are exposed to humidities above a certain value. Furthermore, this recrystallised product is more accommodating than the parent material, and hence it can be consolidated by forces due to menisci or changes in surface free‐energy. AbstractBound styrene is determined in insoluble emulsion polymerised styrene‐butadiene copolymers by measurement of the 10.3 μm/13.2 μm absorbence ratio using the baseline method. This ratio is obtained from the infra‐red spectrogram of the copolymer. The styrene content is then determined from a standard curve. The standard curve is constructed from absorbence ratios of 10.3 μm/13.2 μm derived from the infra‐red spectrograms of cast films of styrene‐butadiene latices over a range of compositions in which the bound styrene has been determined by nitration of the isolated and extracted copolymers. Styrene content based on nitration is determined from standard curves relating styrene concentration to spectrophotometric absorbence measurements at wavelengths of 285.0 nm, 273.8 nm and 265.0 nm.
