AbstractThe thermal decomposition of co‐precipitated alkaline‐earth carbonates, prepared in a manner similar to that used in the manufacture of oxide cathode coatings, has been studied by preparing a calcination series, under vacuum, up to 1200°. Samples were heated in the sorption balance, described previously, up to set temperatures, after which the specific surface and total pore volume of the cooled residue were calculated, using data obtained from the sorption of nitrogen at 77°. AbstractA method for estimating the reactivity of ferric oxide in solid state reaction processes is proposed. The temperature of the emanation curve maximum is taken as a characteristic parameter for the testing of the reactivity.The reactivity of ferric oxides prepared from ferrous sulphate, Mohr's salt (ferrous ammonium sulphate), ferrous oxalate and basic carbonate of iron by decomposition at 700°, 900° and 1100° has been studied. AbstractThe application of a d.c. potential to kaolinite and halloysite pellets during firing under reduced pressure has been found to produce significant improvements in the hardness, tensile strength, and density of the product. AbstractThe kinetics of absorption of isobutylene in molten phenol,p‐cresol and pyrocatechol were studied in a stirred cell using concentrated sulphuric acid as a catalyst. The absorption of isobutylene in molten phenols was found to conform to pseudo‐first‐order mechanism. The products of various reactions were analysed by gas‐liquid chromatography.The absorption of isobutylene in mono‐t‐butyl derivatives of phenols was studied in an agitated glass reactor. It was possible to eliminate the effect of diffusion. The values for the rate constant of the second‐order reactions between isobutylene andp‐t‐butylphenol at 104°, isobutylene and 2‐t‐butyl‐p‐cresol at 70° and isobutylene and 4‐t‐butylpyrocatechol at 104° were 49, 40 and 56 ml/g mole/sec, respectively.Mass transfer influenced the rate of alkylation of phenol andp‐cresol with isobutylene in a bubble column. AbstractA new method and apparatus are described for hydroperoxidation of organic compounds at the liquid/gas interface which is formed in a spirally curved tube. The energy required for stirring is removed, although extra energy is required for the compressors to enable the gas to provide the necessary agitation. The reaction rate should be higher than that in methods used at present.
