摘要:
AbstractThe reaction of methyl linoleate with gaseous styrene at 280° and the analysis of the reaction product is described. It is shown that the main product is an addition compound of one mole of styrene and one mole of methyl linoleate. Ring‐analysis and chemical degradation provided evidence that this product is formed by a Diels—Alder mechanism. No high‐molecular‐weight polystyrene could be found in the reaction

摘要:
AbstractThe solvent‐segregation of linseed oil using furfural and mixtures of furfural and hexane as solvents has been investigated at 15°, 24.5° and 35°. Lower temperatures and higher percentages of hexane lead to maximum separation. An extract fraction (about 16%) having an iodine value of 209 has been obtained under these conditions.Equilibrium curves useful in designing multi‐stage counter‐current extraction columns are p

摘要:
AbstractArachin when exposed to 1.7M‐guanidine hydrochloride is changed to slowly‐sedimenting material by way of an intermediate sedimenting component similar to the arachin dissociation product. After removal of the guanidine hydrochloride by dialysis, the dissociation‐association reactions of the apparently unchanged arachin occur nor

摘要:
AbstractData are given which will allow the drawing of the vapour‐liquid equilibrium diagram for a mixture of methyl benzoate and methyl caprylate, at a pressure of 50 mm. of mercury. The mixture has been used to determine the efficiency of two virtually identical concentric‐tube distillation columns when working at this pressure. Under these conditions their efficiency is approximately half that at atmospheric press

摘要:
AbstractMonolayer properties and infra‐red absorption spectra have been used to study the changes occurring in oils adsorbed on cement in the presence of air. Oils extracted from commercial cements are very similar in properties to lubricant oils artificially added to cement and subsequently allowed to oxidize under various conditions. Polar compounds, notably carboxylic acids, are formed even at room temperature. Similar experiments with hexadecane indicate that the polar molecules are produced by oxidation of the paraffin base of the oil

摘要:
AbstractAn ultrasonic pulse technique has been adapted for studying the rate of hardening of soil‐cement. In this technique, the velocity of propagation of a pulse through the soil‐cement is measured and its increase as the mixture ages indicates the hardening that occurs. The method has advantages over conventional methods in that being non‐destructive, repetitive tests can be made on the same specimen. The presence of organic matter can delay the set of sand‐cement mixes for a matter of weeks, and the method has special advantages in studying the problem of the hardening process of such mixtures. Results have been obtained on cylinders of soil‐cement made from samples of sand which contained different amounts of organic matter. The rate of hardening varied considerably between the different batches of specimens tested. One particular series had not attained a satisfactory strength after six weeks whereas another series was satisfactory after only a few days. Over such diversity of behaviour the pulse velocity provided an adequate means for following the hardening process. The results indicated that, for the particular soil‐cement tested, the compressive strength (C) and the pulse velocity (V) were related by an expression of the

摘要:
AbstractPerformance data for three sizes of climbing film evaporator processing organic liquids are presented. The general trend of the quantitative measurements suggests the existence of a critical operating temperature difference to obtain a maximum performance.General observations of practical design value are offered.
