摘要:
AbstractThe direction of the dehydration in unsymmetrically substituted dialkylethynylcarbinols has been studied, with the help of infra‐red spectra, forisobutylethynylmethylcarbinol; for comparison, the dehydration of diethylethynylcarbinol has been investigated, in which a non‐conjugated hydrocarbon is one of the dehydration produ

摘要:
AbstractThe present paper is an extension of the work on the extraction of phenol from coal‐tar hydrocarbons, and deals with the separation of mixed phenols from coal‐tar hydrocarbons boiling in the range 170–201°. By subsequent treatment of the extract, a final mixed‐phenols product can be produced containing 0·1% of hydrocarbons or less. The outlines of a process for this separation are

摘要:
AbstractNickel reacts with dilute aqueous solutions of bismuth trichloride with deposition of elementary bismuth. There is, however, a range of concentration of the salt within which nickel has no action at 25°. At higher temperatures other factors intervene and smooth reaction occurs. The rate of reaction is increased by moderate stirring but decreases with increasing acid concentration

摘要:
AbstractThe British Standard test for the apparent specific gravity and absorption of coarse aggregate (B.S. 812:1951) has been found to give variable results. The present paper describes an investigation made to devise a test that would not suffer from this variability. The factors thought to affect the results of the test were studied, and it has been found that the following modifications to the standard procedure are desirable:1The size of aggregate tested should preferably be 3/4–1/2 in.2Before the aggregate is weighed in water it should be jolted at least 25 times under the water to remove entrapped air.3The aggregate should be soaked, and the saturated weights determined before oven‐drying, instead of after.4Two cloths should be used to surface‐dry the aggregate, which should be exposed to the atmosphere for at least 10 minutes before the saturated surface‐dry weight is determined.Proposals for a method of test incorporating these and some minor modifications are given in the A

摘要:
AbstractThe rate of corrosion of cast iron by the action of sulphate‐reducing bacteria is increased by the addition of ferrous iron alone or the combined addition of ferrous iron and yeast extract. The addition of yeast extract alone, however, has a retarding effect upon corrosion. The specific action of the added ferrous iron is discussed and the rates of corrosion in heterotrophic conditions are compared with those in autotrophic condition

摘要:
AbstractPart I of the paper deals with the general properties of the flow of concentrated suspensions. The shear stress/rate of shear characteristics of Newtonian, non‐Newtonian, plastic and thixotropic types of flow are briefly set out. The types of suspensions encountered in the paint industry and their flow properties are described, and it is concluded that no generalization is yet possible on the effect of particle size, shape or nature of the chemical interface. In Part II some recent research on the flow of glass spheres in simple liquids is reported: glass spheres were used because they are geometrically simple and are easily made, and the methods of preparing and fractionating them into different size ranges are described. The importance and difficulty of particle‐size analysis are discussed. Results obtained with suspensions containing different concentrations of spheres with different size‐distributions are given and it is found that the particle‐size distribution very much affects the viscosities of suspensions with more than about 30% of spheres by volume. It was found that the more nearly the particle sizes are equal to each other, the lower is the concentration of spheres required for a given viscosity. It was also found that for particle sizes less than 1/μ in diameter, the smaller the size, the greater the th

摘要:
AbstractFormamide (20% aqueous solution) exerts a specific influence on the germicidal power of the saturated fatty acids, the bactericidal action on various micro‐organisms being increased fivefold to tenfold. The hydroxy‐acids are affected by formamide to a much less extent, as also are phenols, isopropyl alcohol, and acetone. The monoalkyl tartrate esters are germicidal toBacterium aerogenesin concentrations from 1 in 250 to 1 in 500. Aliphatic esters, unlike the fatty acids, are not appreciably influenced in germicidal power by formamide. Acetamide and glycol have little effect on the bactericidal action of acids. Formamide increases the adsorption of both formic and acetic acids from dilute aqueous solution by activated charcoal. Possibly, therefore, the marked rise in the germicidal power of the acids in the presence of formamide is associated with an increased uptake of the acids by the bacterial colloids, making a higher concentration of acid within the cells available for disinfect

摘要:
AbstractSome 60 tests have been carried out in working vehicles to establish the efficiency of the benzoate/nitrite corrosion‐inhibitor in service conditions. The testing technique and the method of assessment of results are described. Of special importance is the need to carry out parallel tests in several vehicles, because of the varying rates of corrosion in different vehicles carrying the same coolant. The tests have shown that the addition of 1·5% of sodium benzoate with 0·1% of sodium nitrite to 20% or 33 1/3% solutions of ethylene glycol will effectively prevent corrosion of the cast iron of the cylinder block or head in the usual engine system. Corrosion of the radiator unit will also be prevented. The benzoate/nitrite inhibitor does not always prevent the corrosion of aluminium all
