摘要:
AbstractThe thermal stability of a series of linear and branchedp‐phenylene sulphide polymers at 350° has been evaluated by differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and weight‐loss studies. It has been concluded that there is some indication that the thermal stability increases with the degree of branching present in the polymer and that the stability can be further improved by a preliminary heat treatment in the absence of air. The mechanism of ageing appears to involve a combination of crosslinking, chain scission and oxidation react

摘要:
AbstractThe adsorption of a14C‐labelled sodium carboxy‐methyl cellulose (SCMC) on to textile fibres and soil particles has been investigated. Attempts have been made to relate the amounts of SCMC adsorbed to its anti‐redeposition action. The results show that SCMC is only effective as an anti‐redeposition agent with fabrics on to which it readily adsorbs from detergent so

摘要:
AbstractThe deposition of particulate soil on to a fabric in a wash system has been treated as a particular case of the general colloid stability theory of Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey&Overbeek. The zeta potentials on the fabric and the soil in detergent solutions have been calculated from electrophoretic mobility measurements. The colloid stability of the systems was determined by a sedimentation method. In particular, it is shown that the anti‐redeposition action of sodium carboxy‐methyl cellulose may be adequately explained by repulsive electrostatic and attractive van der Waals for

摘要:
AbstractElectrophoresis and sedimentation studies on cotton and on carbon black, and ASTM carbon soil tests on cotton in which two sodium carboxy‐methyl celluloses (SCMC) of differing degrees of substitution and a propane sulphonate ether of cellulose were used, have shown that the anti‐redeposition properties of SCMC in the detergent formulation may be treated by the Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey&Overbeek theory of colloid stability. However, there is a further stabilising force postulated as being due to solvation of the SCMC molecules on the surface of the cotton and also as being dependent on the molecular weight of the SCMC. The evidence suggests that if the degree of substitution of the SCMC is increased, then to retain the same anti‐redeposition properties, the molecular weight must also be increased. It is concluded that the most suitable SCMC to put into detergent formulations is the type at present

摘要:
AbstractThe oxidation ofp‐xylene in the presence of acetaldehyde as accelerator and cobalt acetate as catalyst at 60–100° was studied using a semi‐batch process in a stirred reactor. Better yields of terephthalic acid (up to 98%) were given than with other methods although the operation was similar. Diffusion was the rate‐determining step, and possibilities for improving reaction rate are d

摘要:
AbstractA crystallographic study, usingX‐ray diffraction techniques, has been made of the interaction effects between the constituents of coke‐binder artefacts when heat‐treated to graphitising temperatures. It is shown that petroleum and pitch cokes graphitise to a greater extent separately than when combined in petroleum coke/pitch binder artefacts, but for artefacts based entirely on either petroleum or pitch, this effect of the binder in retarding graphitisation of the grist coke is very much
