AbstractExamination of cottonseed protein in the ultracentrifuge has revealed the presence of at least four sedimenting components with sedimentation constants of 18, 13, 8 and ∼2 Svedberg units. Ammonium sulphate fractionation failed to purify these components. AbstractAn apparatus has been developed for the determination of vapour‐gas diffusivities based on Arnold's unsteady state method. The diffusivities of water vapour in hydrogen, nitrogen and air, and the diffusivities of water vapour and benzene in a typical coal gas mixture have been determined at 25°, 40° and 55°c. The diffusivities of water vapour in hydrogen, nitrogen and air have been compared with previous experimental results. AbstractBy a combination of high efficiency vacuum fractionation, fractional crystallization and chromatographic separation, the major constituents of the neutral portion of a fraction of the oil obtained on coking a mixed vertical retort/horizontal retort pitch have been isolated and identified.The chief components are: fluoranthene, pyrene, brazan, 2: 3‐benzfluorene, chrysene, triphenylene, 2: 3‐benzcarbazole, 1: 2‐benzanthracene, 11: 12‐benzfluoranthene, 1: 2‐and 3: 4‐benzpyrene, perylene, naphthafluorene and picene. Minor components isolated and identified included propionamide, 2: 3‐dimethylanthracene, 1: 9‐benzxanthen, 1: 2‐benzfluorene, 4‐methylpyrene, 5: 12‐dihydronaphthacene, 4: 9‐dimethylpyrene, phenanthridone, 3‐methylchrysene and 1: 2‐benzperylene; of these 2: 3‐dimethylanthracene, propionamide, 4: 9‐dimethylpyrene and 3‐methylchrysene have not previously been isolated from coal tar.The similarity in the nature of the identified components in this pitch coking oil and those found in our earlier study1of the steam distillate from a vertical retort pitch suggests that the oils produced during the coking of coal tar pitch are a result of d

AbstractUnsteady state diffusion coefficients in porous solids can be calculated by observing the time at which the flux of material through the porous solid is a definite fraction, conveniently one half, of the steady state flux and then substituting this time into a simple equation. The method requires only a few experimental measurements of the flux.

AbstractEpoxy resins derived from bisphenol and resorcinol have been examined as to their adhesive properties in the presence of phthalic anhydride as hardener. From studies of their dielectric behaviour, the effect of hydroxyl‐group content and molecular weight in their monomolecular properties and their adsorption on to aluminium foil, it is concluded that the hydroxyl groups play a decisive part in anchoring the molecules to a (polar) surface. There was very good correlation (significant at the 1% level) between hydroxyl content and nominal breaking strength of joints on an aluminium alloy, and it was shown that the shrinkage of resin mixtures on cooling decreases with hydroxyl conten

AbstractIn connexion with the industrial production of chemical compounds (‘sucrochemicals’) from sugar and its by‐products (see especially reference1), a review is given of the decomposition of sugars in alkaline solutions under different conditions. A continuous apparatus is described in which the formation of lactic acid by alkaline decomposition of sucrose solutions was studied under exactly defined conditions.Optimum yields of approx. 38% (calculated on a theoretical maximum yield of 4 mol. of lactic acid per mol. of sucrose) were obtained at 210°–220° by passing alkaline sucrose solutions (5–20% sucrose, 3–6 mol. of NaOH or KOH per mol. of sucrose) through the reactor for reaction times of 1/2–1 minute at a pressure of 40 atmospheres.
