AbstractInteraction of organophosphorus halides with allylamine and diallylamine yieldsN‐alkenyl‐phosphoramidates: withm‐aminostyrene,N‐m‐styryl derivatives are obtained. These compounds may be polymerised with varying degrees of facility by heat, free‐radical or ammonium persulphate initiation to yield resins or gums. The preparation and properties of phosphoramidate monomers obtained by condensation of these unsaturated amines with mono‐ and bifunctional phosphoro‐, phosphono‐ and phosphonothio‐chloridates is described. The attempted condensation of phosphoramidates with αβ‐unsaturated acid chlorides to obtainN‐unsaturated acyl phosphoramidates gave syrups which resinified on heating to yield brittle solids high in phosphorus and nitrogen. Some of the compounds described have been used to impregnate wood blocks, and polymerisedin situ, either by heat, chemical or irradiation initiation, and they imparted flame‐retardant properties to the wood which were resis

AbstractManganese in the pulp during the bleaching process has a marked effect in reducing the reflectance of the pulp. This effect is most notable in the chlorine dioxide bleaching stage. The effect is variable depending on the stage and solubility of the manganese contamination, the final pH of thc pulp, the filter water used in washing the pulp and other unknown and variable factors. The manganese contamination of unbleached pulp is largely removed in the chlorination stage, but subsequent contamination is more difficult to remove although a final acid wash does improve the reflectance.

AbstractThe extraction of copper, nickel and cobalt from solutions of constant ionic strength by naphthenic acid has been studied as a function of pH, metal and naphthenic acid concentration. The extracted species in benzene solution have been identified as Ni2R4,4RH and Co2R4,4RH while an empirical formula of CuR2RH may be written for the copper complex, where RH represents the naphthenic acid. In the case of the copper however there is indirect evidence for a dimeric complex. The extractions are shown to conform with the general pattern of liquid cation‐exchange as exemplified by the alkyl phosphoric acids and the aromatic sulphonic acid

AbstractThe adsorption of phenol by various amine‐activated montmorillonites has been studied and the resulting expansion of the basal spacings of the derivatives measured. The results indicate that the expansion of the basal spacings of the primary amine derivatives is strictly limited, whereas with the quaternary ammonium‐treated clays a much greater expansion is found, and a correspondingly larger amount of phenol is adsorbed.A comparison of the amount of phenol adsorbed by the quaternary ammonium compound in solution and when the latter is ion‐exchanged on to the clay, shows that a considerable increase in adsorption occurs in the latter
