AbstractIn view of some discrepancies between results published by Davies1on the corrosion of aluminium in synthetic supply waters and of similar tests carried out by this Association, additional tests have been carried out on waters having the same compositions as those used by Davies.The relative severity of attack in solutions of different calcium carbonate contents is shown to depend upon the period of immersion. These differences are related to differences in the type of attack taking place, according to whether the temporary hardness of the water is less than equal to or greater than the chloride content.

AbstractThe application of cationic surfactants to surface dressing and coated materials is discussed and results are given of some recent full‐scale road experiments. It is shown that the application of cationic agents in surface dressing may now be extended successfully to bitumen macadam and other coated materials. The action of cationic agents in bituminous materials is to some extent specific and care is needed in their selection for a particular purpose. AbstractMethods that have been developed for the potentiometric titration of acidic substances in bitumen with potassium methoxide as the titrant are described. The carboxylic acids and other strong acids are determined by titration in a neutral solvent (a mixture of benzene and methanol).Titrations have been carried out with bitumens to which carboxylic acids and pure phenols have been added. These have shown that carboxylic acids and phenols can be accurately determined in the presence of bitumen by the potentiometric technique.

AbstractThe acidimetric titration as generally used in analysis of carbonate/bicarbonate was found to be inaccurate whenever the concentration ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate was very different from unity.The pH at the equivalent point for the carbonate varied over the range 7.8–9.1 as a function of the initial concentrations.These facts limit the usefulness of the acidimetric titration in this case to the determination of total alkalinity.
