摘要:
AbstractSea‐water‐spray corrosion tests have been made on two magnesium alloys, an aluminium alloy and mild steel painted with primers made from seventeen chromate pigments incorporated in turn in a stand oil/coumarone medium. Best all‐round protection was given by strontium chromate. Fair to good protection was given by potassium zinc chrome, sodium zinc chrome, zinc monoxychromate, zinc tetroxychromate and calcium chromate. Three complex cadmium chromes, three lead chromes and barium chromate all gave poor re

摘要:
AbstractThe aldolization of aldehydes, catalysed by anionic exchangers, as formerly described, can be extended to a similar reaction in which aldehydes react with ketones; it is shown that, by using rather strongly basic anion exchangers, the reaction goes a step further in the condensation process through loss of water to give olefinic aldehydes by crotonization.

摘要:
AbstractDirect still photography and flash silhouettes have been used to obtain information on the factors governing the incidence of methane/air ignitions caused by instantaneous and short‐delay electric detonators. The probability of an instantaneous detonator causing ignitions appears to be a function of the nature and size of the explosive charge and the density to which it is pressed. The incendivity of the short‐delay series, on the other hand, appears to be governed by the type of delay element used, and whether that element has a slag ejection confined within certain limits of ejection velocity and projected distance. A non‐incendive short‐delay detonator has also been inves

摘要:
AbstractAlumina precipitates have been prepared by treating sodium hydroxide with either aluminium chloride, or sulphate, at pH 5. Adsorption isotherms of nitrogen, determined at −196°on the outgassed products, were all of reversible S‐type, characteristic of physical adsorption on non‐porous solids. Surface areas have been calculated by the usual Brunauer, Emmett&Teller method and related to the conditions of precipitation and subsequent washing. In this preliminary study, products showing very high surface areas were obtained from aluminium chloride by precipitating alumina in the presence of acetate buffer and washing finally with e

摘要:
AbstractThe integral diffusion coefficients of acetone, acetic acid, benzoic acid, diethylamine and uranyl nitrate in water and in a number of organic solvents have been determined at 20°. The mutual diffusion coefficients of four partially miscible solvent‐water pairs have also been determined, the solvents being aniline, ethyl acetate, furfuraldehyde andisobutanol. An improved diaphragm cell was used for these measurements, both compartments being agitated by electromagnetically driven stirrers. The existence of a critical stirring rate, different for each cell, below which the cell constant varied was demonstrated. An Appendix is included demonstrating how differential diffusion constants could be determined directly with a cell of this ty

摘要:
AbstractFurther experiments have been carried out to investigate the effect of hydrochloric acid gas and chlorine additions to the fuel (town's gas) on the corrosion of cooled mild‐steel probes by flue gases containing sulphur oxides. The probe‐surface temperature was varied from 27°to 150°. The characteristic corrosion peak was observed between the water and acid dew‐points and the addition of hydrochloric acid gas and chlorine increased the corrosion by some 40%. Below the water dew‐point temperature (40°) a very large increase in corrosion was found and this was greatly accelerated by the addition of hydrochloric acid gas an

摘要:
AbstractStatistical examination of a section of Cady's experimental results relating the partial pressure of hydrofluoric acid over solutions of potassium fluoride in hydrofluoric acid to composition and temperature yields the equation:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \log P = 2.0733 - 4244(1/T) + 0.2975C + 47.94(C + T - 0.003785C^2 $$\end{document}wherePis the partial pressure of hydrofluoric acid (mm. Hg),Tis the absolute temperature andCis the concentration of hydrofluoric acid in the solution, expressed as a weight percentage. Although this equation is subject to bias the error in values ofPcalculated from it may be presumed to be less than 5% in the region of 38–44% concentration and at temperatures of 70–150°C. A Table is given of the calculated values of the partial pressure of hydrofluoric acid within this region at 0.5% intervals of concentration and 5.0°intervals of temper
