摘要:
AbstractA study is made of the physical characteristics of linear and cyclic polysiloxanes. It is shown that by plottingv20/v70versus v20(v= kinematic viscosity) it is possible to determine the average number of silicon atoms per molecule in a mixture of linear and cyclic siloxanes, and the average ratio of silicon atoms in linear structure to those in cyclic structure and to predict physical constants of siloxanes when two of them are known.

摘要:
AbstractThe form of decomposition of stibine when mixed with large quantities of other gases differs rom that which it undergoes in the pure form as described by Stock and his co‐workers. In the presence of gases such as hydrogen, stibine slowly decomposes into hydrogen and minute particles of antimony metal which are suspended in the gases; ultimately a mirror or film of antimony is formed on the walls of the vessel. If sufficient oxygen is also present, particles of less than 5 μ in diameter are produced, which subsequently form a white deposit on the base of the vessel and consist mainly of antimony trioxide with some higher oxides. The amount of stibine in the gases evolved from lead storage batteries has been measur

摘要:
AbstractIn connexion with work on the utilization of pulverized‐fuel ash, spectrographic methods are described for the determination of 30 trace elements.Determinations of these elements in 18 ashes were carried out, but none was present in concentrations sufficient for economic recovery. Apart from titanium, where the concentration is of the order of 1%, only manganese exceeds 0.mD1%, while copper, lead, zinc, nickel and chromium fall in the range 0.mD01–0.mD1%. Concentrations of other elements are much below 0.mD01%, while thallium, cadmium, mercury, rubidium, tungsten, silver, zirconium, platinum, indium, palladium, lanthanum and gold were not detec

摘要:
AbstractA polymorph of RDX was obtained by crystallization from the fused compound. The same or a second polymorph crystallized from TNT. It was unstable and thus unlikely to occur in melts containing an undissolved excess of RDX.RDX/TNT castings contained no eutectic‐like intergrowths unless the RDX grains had settled. Such intergrowths then appeared near the boundaries between the TNT laths that had crystallized from the supernatant melt. They contained RDX in great excess over the eutectic ratio.Various phenomena on the microscopical hot‐stage demonstrated the slow diffusion of RDX dissolved in TNT. Recrystallization of RDX in TNT melts was thus not marked unless optimum conditions prevailed, e.g., vigorous stirring or fine grain‐sizes. Recrystallization was isothermal or associated with temperature‐cycling. It was usually accompanied by a permanent increase in the consistency of the melt, but if the RDX grains were initially small and very‐angular, a decrease in viscosity co

摘要:
AbstractFusion‐cast mixtures of CE and TNT were examined by microscopical andX‐ray methods. They contained no molecular compounds although the occurrence of supercooled, highly viscous melts suggested molecular association. It is not denied that the compound CE.4TNT postulated by Howsonet al, may become stable enough to crystallize under appropriate conditions. The crystallized mixtures showed anomalous micro‐structures, e.g., the presence of intergrowths of CE and TNT in which the CE was much in excess of the eutectic ratio. The anomalies are ascribed to supercooling and reference is made to analogous occurrences in the system betol‐salol and in metallic alloys.Oriented crystals were related to cooling surfaces or to the mechanical influence of s

摘要:
AbstractSpecial techniques are described for the microscopical investigation of plastic explosive (PE) which contained RDX grains bonded by oil. Prior to the heating of the PE during manufacture, this oil was accompanied by water globules. Rolling of the PE reduced the grain size of the RDX. The resulting fine fragments were well distributed among the coarser particles, but both coarse and fine grains were capable of developing dimensional parallelism in response to deformation.

摘要:
AbstractMolecular compounds or solid solutions of PETN and TNT were not observed. The reported eutectic contained approx. 13% by weight of PETN but, in fusion‐cast 50/50 mixtures containing much undissolved PETN, eutectic‐like intergrowths were either absent or anomalously rich in PETN. The eutectic mixture itself solidified as crystals of TNT with interstitial intergrowths of TNT and excess PETN. A 50/50 mixture, completely fused and then chilled, crystallized as a eutectic‐like intergrowth. In solidified 50/50 mixtures, fusion‐cast at 90–94°, the PETN crystals retained their original shape‐characteristics because little PETN had been dissolved at such temperatures. These crystals were enclosed by crystals of TNT.Added wax caused no obvious changes in the microstructures of the castings and at least some of it persisted as segregations.TNT crystals, elongated on [c], tended to point inwards from the walls of the mould unless their crystallization had been disturbed. The microstructures resembled those of fusion‐cast RDX‐TNT; further, PETN resembled RDX in recrystallizing during prolonged contact

摘要:
AbstractFusion‐cast amatols contained ammonium nitrate grains included in TNT crystals. Some TNT crystals were prisms elongated on [c] and approximately perpendicular to the wall of the mould. Ammonium nitrate grains were mono‐ or poly‐crystalline and some showed evidence of aggregation prior to incorporation with fused TNT; aggregation during fusion casting was rarely indicated. Segregation of the grains by pressure from growing TNT prisms was seen in a few castings unusually poor in ammonium nitrate. At least some proportion of added wax appeared as segregations in TNT. Added aluminium grains were found in or between TNT crystals. Parallel layers of ammonium nitrate and TNT occurred in parts of test‐pieces of pressed amatol.Completely fused mixtures of TNT with eutectic proportions of ammonium, calcium and sodium nitrates, were simple or multiple emulsions; the structures of these emulsions became ‘frozen’ when the melt

摘要:
AbstractThe ignition delay of turpentine is not affected by the proportion of oxidizing agent added. The delay is reduced by addition to the nitric acid of oleum up to a certain concentration or by addition of catalysts in the order Fe Cl3>NH4VO3>Cu Cl2, but is increased by dilution with petroleum.
